Abstract

We have observed the inelastic scattering of 150 MeV electrons from two even iron isotopes. Six levels were found in iron-54 (1.4,2.9,4.1,4.85,6.4 and 7.2 MeV) and five levels in iron-56 (0.85,2.7,3.1,4.45 and 5.05 MeV). By means of a Born approximation analysis of the scattered electron angular distributions the multipolarity was determined, and, by extra-polation, the reduced transition probabilities of corresponding γ transitions. These results establish the collective character of the observed transitions. Electric transitions with L = 2, 3, 4 were identified. For a given multipolarity similar form factors were found. A first group includes the known two first E2 transitions. For each nucleus two octupole vibration levelswere found: 4.85 and 6.4 MeV levels for iron-54 and 3.1 and 4.45 MeV levels for iron-56. The values of vibration parameters BL and CL connected with the collective model confirm the collective character of levels excited by inelastic electron scattering.
