Abstract

The 4.5 MV Dynamitron injector for our 6 MV Tandem is now used to provide a proton beam for a dedicated FIXE, RBS, PIGE microbeam facility. An electrostatic quadrupole triplet lens produces a beam spot of 20 μm diameter. The target chamber, which is a modified 4 in. Dependex cross, houses an electron flood gun, and SB detectors. The targets are mounted on a stepper motor controlled HPT 040 micromanipulator. A 30 mm² Si(Li) detector (FWHM = 154 eV at 5.9 keV) is used for PIXE measurements. Data on the impurities found in “water trees”, which are associated with breakdown in electrical cables, will be presented.

Two-dimensional impurity distributions in "water trees" occurring in field aged HV cables

Two-dimensional mu-PIXE scans of sections through large (1 to 2 mm) vented “water trees”, found at the inner semicon-XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) interface in underground HV cables, were made at 50 μm spacing with a proton energy of 1.0 MeV. The visual appearance of one tree is reproduced by the spatial distributions of the elements Na, Cl, K and Ca, while Si and S show only minor variation except for the change at the semicon-XLPE interface. A second sample with three adjacent trees shows little or no correlation between the visual trees and the impurity distributions, although a high spatial correlation between Na and Cl suggests the presence of NaCl in one of these three trees.
Nuclear mubeams: Realization and use as scientific tool

A nuclear mubeam is an ion beam focussed down to a spot of only a few μm in diameter. If such a beam is surrounded by equipment for elemental analysis we have the nuclear muprobe (NMP) suited for elemental analysis with μm spatial resolution and detection limits of a few ppm. The beam focus is achieved by collimation to some 10 μm and further demagnification with the help of an appropriate lens system. The need to fabricate the mechanical parts to a very high precision and to avoid slit scattering at the collimators will be demonstrated and a guide to the optimal design will be given. The different ways of realization are illustrated. Applications in different fields of science are given and the availability of NMPs throughout the world illustrated.
Experimental arrangements for the simultaneous use of PIXE and complementary accelerator based techniques

A Tandetron-based microbeam system

A Tandetron offers the important qualities required for a microbeam system, namely energy stability and high-current delivery. A microbeam system based on an electrostatic “Russian quadruplet” lens has been built at the CSIRO HIAF laboratory, based on a 3 MV Tandetron. The system has been designed with minerals research as the main purpose. Specification and performance of the system is described.
Micro-PIXE analysis of impurity distributions in "trees" grown in high-voltage cables

Water treeing and electrical treeing are degradation processes occurring in the polyethylene insulation of underground high-voltage cables that can lead to premature breakdown. In order to determine the nature and content of impurities present in the trees, which typically have dimensions of 50–200 μm, a PIXE (proton-induced X-ray emission) microbeam system with a beam-spot diameter of less than 20 μm has been installed on a 4.5 MV Dynamitron accelerator. The capabilities of this system are illustrated by multi-element radial scans that show the presence of a wide variety of contaminants in the trees.
Proton Microprobes and Their Applications

This chapter summarizes the theoretical and the technical problems to overcome in the generation of sub-micron beams of fast protons, and to identify the most recent developments in the field of ion optics as they relate to this problem. Many microprobes are attached to small low energy single-ended Van de Graaff accelerators. Others use linear accelerators or cyclotrons as the source of particles. The availability of the accelerator in each case determines the nature of the concomitant microprobe facility that is also reviewed in this chapter. The relative merits of various sources as beam input to a proton microprobe and the appropriate energies for which such microprobes might be designed are also discussed. The chapter also discusses the methods of mounting and scanning samples, registering and analyzing data, and investigating the effect of sample deterioration and reviews typical applications of this microanalytical technique followed by a discussion on the experimental advantages that a 30 to 50 MeV transmission microprobe may have over existing low energy devices.
