Abstract

Recently measured proton- and 4He-ion-induced Li-subshell ionization cross sections for the elements with 46 ≤ Z ≤ 60 have been compared with the ECPSSR predictions. A recalculation of the binding correction, which leads, when the incident energy decreases, to a limit of the binding energy of the electrons concerned corresponding to a United-Atom approximation is suggested. A good agreement between the experimental and predicted L-shell ionization cross sections and a satisfactory one for the single Li-subshell ones is obtained. The introduction of vacancy rearrangement effects gives further better agreement, but not enough to reproduce completely the experimental findings.

In fact, it is possible as observed in the present work and the studies of Cipolla et al. [19–20] and Miranda et al. [21] and so on. Inner-shell ionization cross section can be predicted by the theories of binary encounter approximation (BEA) [22], plane wave Born approximation (PWBA) [4], energy-loss Coulomb-repulsion perturbed-stationary-state relativistic (ECPSSR) [5] and refined ECPSSR at low energies with modification of united and separated atom approximation (ECUSAR) [6,7]. Considerable amount of literature show ECPSSR theory presents a good description of K- and total L-shell ionization in the intermediate and high-energy region [2,23].

While, as it is reviewed in the next section, experimental L-shell cross sections compiled previously [1–3] have often been compared with the results of the ECPSSR theory or its modifications, the presently compiled data are not compared with any theory. With global proliferation of the Geant4 Toolkit [48], any theoretical cross sections that it employs must be scrutinized by comparison with the latest and most comprehensive experimental database. The database presented in this work is a significant update to the data compiled by Hardt and Watson [1], Sokhi and Crumpton [2], and Orlic et al. [3].
