Abstract

We have designed and constructed a new detector system for searching for double beta decays. It consists of a stack of lithium-drifted, surface barrier silicon detectors interleaved with thin source foils. The segmentation greatly reduces backgrounds. The system is free from radioactive backgrounds above 2.5 MeV. The apparatus is also a versatile low background counting facility with high sensitivity.
