Abstract

A model which incorporates the coupling of the ω meson and a chiral singlet scalar meson, the ϵ meson, to skyrmions is studied within various approximations. The results obtained show the importance of non local effects due to the finite masses of the mesons. When these are treated correctly, the model is able to provide simultaneously a good fit to baryon masses and a realistic description of the NN interaction. It appears also from this work that, beyond a certain level of accuracy, effective lagrangians resulting from local expansion in derivatives of the pion field alone, like the Skyrme model, are inadequate. Soliton solutions of effective lagrangians constructed from low lying mesons seem more realistic for describing the low energy physics of baryons.
