Abstract

The quasifree scattering of deuterons on protons using a deuteron target has been measured at different bombarding energies between 45 and 80 MeV. An unexpected dip in the excitation function of the cross section shows up at about 60 MeV.

The deuteron break-up in the reaction dd → dpn at 52 MeV

The three-particle reaction dd → dpn has been investigated systematically at an energy of 52 MeV. Proton-deuteron and neutron-deuteron coincidences have been measured in kinematically complete experiments in order to study the angular dependence of the np final state interaction and of pd and nd quasifree scattering. The experimental results show that the angular distribution for the production of np pairs with zero relative energy can be predicted absolutely from elastic dd scattering. No indication of violation of isospin conservation is found in the experiment. The measured angular distributions for nd and pd quasifree scattering are identical within the experimental errors over a wide range of angles. Their shape is similar to the distribution of elastic nucleon-deuteron scattering. Significant deviations between the pd and nd coincidence spectra (measured under identical kinematical conditions) have been observed only at forward angles, indicating the influence of the Coulomb force on the break-up mechanism. In order to analyze the spectra and angular distributions, different model calculations have been carried out.
Study of the <sup>2</sup>H(d, dp)n reaction in the energy range between 50 and 85 MeV

Proton-deuteron coincidence spectra from the ²H(d, dp)n reaction have been measured in the incident energy range from 50 to 85 MeV. Two angle pairs, namely (θ_d, θ_p) = (25°, ≈ 44°) and (40°, ≈ 48°), were chosen corresponding to the quasi-free scattering (QFS) and final state interaction (FSI), respectively. The QFS coincidence spectra were projected onto the proton energy axis and compared with the theoretical predictions based on the modified simple impulse approximation (MSIA) using a sharp cut-off radius. Good agreement between experiment and theory was found for all measured spectra, with the cut-off radius decreasing with incident energy. The present results and those from the re-evaluation of the data underlying a previous publication do not support former indications for a “dip” in the QFS cross section at about 60 MeV incident energy. The shapes of the similarly projected FSI coincidence spectra compare well with the theoretical prediction based on the triplet enhancement factor alone.
