Abstract

We have determined the D-parameter to be less than 1.0 at four angles in p-⁹Be elastic scattering at 25 MeV. These results strengthen considerably the evidence for the existence of a nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interaction.

Depolarization in elastic proton scattering and the nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interaction

The depolarization parameter D in proton- ¹³C elastic scattering at 72 MeV has been measured at 34° ⩽ θ_c.m. ⩽ 69° with an overall accuracy of (3–4) × 10⁻³. Significant deviations from D = 1 were observed around 65°. This finding constitutes unambiguous evidence for a nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interaction. The data were fitted by a conventional optical model potential which included a real, spherical spin-spin potential with surface form factor and V_ss = 0.7 ± 0.1 MeV. Good description of the data was also obtained by a microscopic calculation which was based on a density dependent, effective interaction and shell model wave-functions. Similar calculations for ⁹Be, ¹⁵N, ²⁹Si and ³¹P are consistent with recent data. In particular, they explain the large effects observed for ¹⁵N.
Spin-Spin interactions in nucleon-nucleus scattering

Nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interactions are constructed using generalized spin-spin operators, then formulas for spin-spin analyzing cross sections are derived in DWBA. A valence-nucléon model is used to derive potentials from effective nucleon-nucleon interactions, including exchange contributions. Spin-spin cross sections are then calculated in DWBA for ²⁷Al, ⁵⁹Co, and ⁹³Nb in the neutron energy range 10 to 60 MeV and compared to data.
Deformation and target spin-dependent effects in <sup>9</sup>Be + p at 220 MeV

Cross-section and analyzing-power measurements were performed for the $^{9} Be (p, p_{0})^{9} Be and^{9} Be (p, p_{2})^{9} Be^{∗}$ reactions. The depolarization parameter D was also measured on the first reaction. The data were analyzed in terms of standard optical-model and macroscopic DWBA as well as coupled-channel calculations. The former approach does not reproduce well the elastic and inelastic analyzing-power data. Coupled-channel calculations provide a good description of both the cross- section and analyzing-power data. The D-data are interpreted in terms of contributions from both the quadrupole spin-flip mechanism and the nucleon-nucleus spin-spin interactions.
