Gross structure and resonant behavior of 14C + 14C elastic scattering

Abstract

The excitation function of ¹⁴C + ¹⁴C elastic scattering at θ _cm = 90° from E_lab = 23.4–58.4 MeV shows pronounced oscillations. Angular distributions measured at the maxima of these oscillaations show Legendre polynomial behavior of L = 12, 14, 16 and 18.

Energy levels of A = 21-44 nuclei (VII)

The experimentally determined properties of A = 21–44 nuclides are complied and evaluated with special emphasis on nuclear spectroscopy.
Separate tables for each of the nuclides reviewed present the available information about the following properties (in this order):

  - excitation energies E_x,
- •
  - γ-ray branching ratios b(γ),
- •
  - γ-ray mixing ratios σ,
- •
  - lifetimes γ_m or widths Λ,
- •
  - neutron, proton, or α-particle resonances,
- •
  - partial widths,

  - single-nucleon transfer reactions,

  - beta-decay,
- •
  - arguments for spin and parity (J^π) and isospin (T) assignments.
For each nuclide a master table summarizing the “best” or adopted values for E_x, J^π; T and τ_m or Λ precedes the auxiliary tables listed above.
The review of each A-chain concludes with a discussion of isospin multiplets.
Figures are presented of the level schemes of all nuclei and, for each A-chain, an overview of the relative energies of the ground states and lowest analogue states of all nuclei in the chain.
Elastic scattering and fusion cross sections of 13C+13C

The ¹³C+¹³C total fusion cross section has been determined in the range 3.26⩽E_c.m.⩽8.0 MeV using Ge(Li) detector measurements of low-lying transitions in the residual nuclei and a statistical model calculation of excited state populations. The six most abundantly produced residual nuclei have been observed and their yields are given. To constrain the parameters in fusion models for these reactions, we have also taken elastic scattering data at θ_c.m.=60°, 70°, 80°, and 90° for 4.5⩽E_c.m.⩽8.5 MeV, as well as angular distributions at E_c.m.=7.0 and 8.0 MeV. The IWBC model and an optical model with a “shallow” potential have been used for parametrizing the nucleus-nucleus interaction.
Scattering and reactions of 14C + 14C and 14C + 14C

We have studied elastic scattering, inelastic scattering and several transfer channels of the systems ¹⁴C + ¹⁴C and ¹⁴C + ¹²C over a wide range of energies up to E_c.m. = 35 eMeV and 32 MeV, respectively. The reaction channels were identified by means of kinematic coincidences between solid-state detectors, γγ coincidences were measured to determine cross sections for mutual inelastic scattering of ¹⁴C + ¹⁴C.
Pronounced regular gross structures, similar to those found for ¹⁶O + ¹⁶O, are observed in the elastic excitation function of ¹⁴C + ¹⁴C at θ_c.m. = 90°, The angular distributions measured at the energies of the maxima and an optical-model analysis suggest that one or a few surface partial waves dominate the scattering behaviour. Correlated structure of narrower width is found in the inelastic channels and, to a lesser degree, in the transfer channels which appear with rather small cross sections.
In ¹⁴C + ¹²C elastic scattering the gross structures are strongly fragmented, in contrast to ¹⁴C + ¹⁴C but similar to ¹²C + ¹²C. While the ¹²C(2⁺) excitation is very weak, the observed strengths of the ¹⁴C(3⁻) excitation and of neutron transfer point to a substantial role of these channels as coupling partners to the elastic configuration and to their influence on the elastic scattering behaviour. A correlated intermediate structure is observed near 23.5 MeV, where a dominance of l = 18 is suggested by the elastic scattering angular distribution. This unexpectedly high l-value exceeds l_graz at this energy by at least two units of ħ.
Fusion oscillations for symmetric light heavy-ion systems

The low-energy fusion cross section for ²⁰Ne+²⁰Ne has been measured. The data extend the systematics on fusion oscillations for such light symmetric systems. A simple extension of the usual barrier penetration model displays the decisive role of the symmetrisation of the system. It is also capable of qualitatively explaining the trends in this effect, in particular its decreasing importance as the mass of the system increases. The structure is essentially due to the sharpness of the cut-off of transmission coefficients as a function of angular momentum. The curvature of the Coulomb barrier is important in determining these coefficients and it is shown that the required values of this quantity are consistent with reasonable values of the surface diffuseness of the nuclear potential.
Microscopic investigation of the 14C + 14C interaction

¹⁴C + ¹⁴C scattering is studied microscopically in the framework of the generator-coordinate method. Two different descriptions of the ¹⁴C nucleus provide essentially the same phase shifts. With the introduction of an empirical absorptive term, the model is in excellent agreement with experimental excitation functions. A Woods-Saxon and a squared Woods-Saxon potential, which provide similar fits to the data, are also deduced.
