Observation of the 3He(p, n) 3p reaction at 25 MeV

Abstract

The neutron energy spectrum from the reaction ³He(p, n) 3p has been measured at a laboratory angle of 8° for a proton bombarding energy of 24.9 MeV. A deviation of the spectrum shape from the prediction for four-body phase space has been observed.

Double-charge-exchange and inelastic scattering in π-+3He

The reactions π⁻+³He→⁺+3n and π⁻+³He→⁻+³He were studied to investigate the $T= 32$ three-nucleon system. The differential cross sections were measured at scattering angles from 20 to 40 degrees. The secondary pion was momentum analyzed in a magnetostrictive-readout wire-chamber spectrometer. The double-charge-exchange reaction yielded a secondary pion energy distribution, the features of which can be due to either a $T= 32$ three-nucleon resonance or a resonace of the nucleons in the ³He nucleus. The inelasticc scaterring reaction yielded a secondary pion energy distribution peaked near threshold, consistent with resonances in both the $T= 32$ and $T= 12$ three-nucleon systems.
Two-nucleon final state interactions and the 4He(p, t)2p, 4He(p, 3he)pn and 4He(p, d)3He reactions at 156 MeV

The pp and pn final state interaction (FSI) spectra were measured in the ⁴He(p, t)2p and ⁴He(p, ³He)pn reactions at 156 MeV. The Watson-Migdal treatment and the known scattering length were used to analyse the spectrum shapes at different small angles: the agreement obtained is quite good; the Watson-Migdal assumptions are indeed better satisfied for higher primary energies. Use of a modified Born approximation for the pp spectrum further improves the fit. When comparing the absolute magnitudes of the three reactions, it appears that the ⁴He(p, ³He)pn spectra should include mainly the singlet contribution. The angular distribution of the reaction ⁴He(p, d)³He has been measured from 3° to 177° (c.m.). No evidence has been found for excited states of ³He.
A proton-recoil spectrometer using solid-state detectors and particle identification
1970, Nuclear Instruments and Methods
A proton recoil neutron spectrometer using a thin radiator, three solid-state detectors and particle identification has been tested at 20 MeV neutron energy. Particle identification, a triple coincidence requirement between the detectors and the detection of recoil protons at 10° with respect to the neutron beam result in a very low background (<0.5%). Detailed mechanical and electronic designs of the spectrometer are presented. The system is compared with a time-of-flight spectrometer for energies between 20 and 80 MeV under conditions yielding energy resolutions of 2%.
