Abstract

The total cross section for the photodisintegration of the deuteron has been measured at 15, 20 and 25 MeV photon energy. The results agree with theory within the experimental errors of ± 5 % and do not confirm a 20 % discrepancy between experiment and theory as previously reported in the literature.

The (γ, n) photonuclear cross-sections for 2H extracted from MCNP6.2 using Eq. (11) are presented in Fig. 18. Experimental data measured by Ahrens et al. (1974), by Birenbaum et al. (1985), by Hara et al. (2003) and the data from the IAEA/PD-2019 library (Kawano et al., 2020) are also plotted on this graph. We can deduct from this figure that the maximum of the (γ, n) cross-section curve around 4.5 MeV is undervalued.

Group (1) the coefficients A0,A1,A2 and A3 which are extracted from the experimental data in the energy range of E≤120 MeV [30,31]. Here A0 also can be directly gotten from the experimental total cross-section [24,32–40] by A0=σT/4π. With 13 sets of data and forty free parameters in total, we obtain χ2 =830.8/289.
