The Kπ = 2− octupole vibration band in 182W

Abstract

An investigation of the electromagnetic properties of the K^π = 2⁻ octupole band in ¹⁸²W populated in the β⁻ decay of ¹⁸²Ta was undertaken. The multipolarity mixings of the intraband 114 keV and 85 keV transitions were determined from L-subshell measurements. The mixing parameters δ²(E2/M1) are 0.130(7) and 0.124(2) respectively. The directional correlations of the (100–1121) keV, (100–1157) keV and (100–1189) keV cascades were investigated. The E1, M2, E3 mixing of the 1189 keV transition was extracted from the angular correlation coefficients and conversion data taken from the literature. We get a mixing of (57.0 ± 3.7) % E1 + (13.7 ± 1.9) % M2 + (29.3 ± 6.6) % E3. A centroid shift determination of the lifetime of the 3⁻(1374keV)state gave the result τ = 112 ± 15 ps. From this we obtain the reduced E3 transition probability from the ground state as B(E3; O⁺ → 3⁻) = (8.0 ± 1.2) · 10⁴e² · fm⁶ = (41 ± 6)SPU. The g-factor of this state was measured using the integral PAC method in the hyperfine field of an iron host lattice yielding g = 0.32(9). The experimental data are discussed in terms of the collective model taking into account Coriolis coupling.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for known nuclides of mass number 182 (Yb,Lu,Hf,Ta,W,Re,Os,Ir,Pt,Au, Hg,Tl,Pb) with Z=70 to 82 and N=112 to 100 have been evaluated and presented together with adopted energies and Jπ of levels in these nuclei. No excited state data are yet available for ¹⁸²Y and ¹⁸²Lu, while only limited structure information is available for ¹⁸²Pb and ¹⁸²Tl. Rotational band structures are known for ¹⁸²Hg and ¹⁸²Au but spin–parity assignments remain largely tentative. The decays of ¹⁸²Lu, ¹⁸²Hg, ¹⁸²Au and ¹⁸²Tl are not well established. The ¹⁸²Hf isotope is of geophysical and astrophysical interest.
This evaluation supersedes previous full evaluations of A = 182 published by 2010Si13, 1988Fi05 and 1975Sc13, and a selected (mainly high–spin) update of A = 182 published by 1995Si04.

Reduced electric-octupole transition probabilities, B(E3;0<inf>1</inf>+ → 3<inf>1</inf>-) - An update

A previous compilation of excitation energies E_x (3₁⁻) and reduced electric-octupole transition probabilities B(E3;0₁⁺→3₁⁻) for first 3⁻ states of even-even nuclides, which covered the literature to March 1988, has been updated to cover the literature to the end of 2000. Data obtained from various experimental procedures are tabulated. The final table presents adopted values of B(E3;0₁⁺→3₁⁻), together with the E3 transition strengths |M(E3)|² in Weisskopf units. Plots of |M(E3)|² versus mass number A, atomic number Z, and neutron number N confirm the existence of structure suggested in the earlier work.

Sidebands and high-spin states in 182Os

High-spin rotational states in ¹⁸²Os have been studied using singles and coincidence γ-ray techniques and the ¹⁷⁰Er(¹⁶O, 4n) reaction. The yrast sequence of states has been extended to spin 24⁺ and 7 sidebands identified. These are the γ-vibrational and K = 3⁻ octupole bands and five two-quasiparticle bands including the K = 8⁻(τ = 1.1 ms) isomer band. The octupole vibrational band is rotation aligned and may also mix with two-quasiparticle configurations involving an $i_{132}$ neutron or an $h_{92}$ proton orbit. The bands with K = 5⁽⁻⁾ and 8⁻ also involve an $i_{132}$ neutron and have high apparent moments of inertia. As well as the $(i_{132})^{2}$ s-band, two other rotation aligned positive-parity bands are observed and they are suggested to be the yrare $(i_{132})^{2}$ neutron bands. The bands are characterized in terms of their most probable Nilsson configurations. The level scheme of ¹⁸¹Os was reinvestigated and the $i_{132}$ neutron band extended to spin $492^{+}$ .
Rotational and intrinsic structure of 182W from the (α, 2nγ) reaction and decay of 182mRe

The ¹⁸⁰Hf(α, 2nγ) reaction was used to populate states in ¹⁸²W. In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy experiments result in assignment of 59 levels to the ¹⁸²W level scheme. Eleven rotational bands are identified, and most of these are characterized. A previously reported 1.4 μs isomer is characterized as the K^π = 10⁺ triplet coupling of $92^{+}$ [624] and $112^{+}$ [615] neutrons, the first seniority two i_$132$ configuration to be identified in the rare-earth deformed region. The strongly coupled band built on this isomer apparently becomes yrast above spin 16. Data from EC β⁺ decay of 64 h ^182mRe were used to supplement the in-beam data.
