Abstract

Neutron pick-up in the N = 20 closed shell has been studied for the three isotones ⁴⁰Ca, ³⁹K and ³⁷Cl using the (³He, α) reaction. The results have been analyzed with previously determined optical potentials and the spectroscopic factors compared to theoretical values calculated from several models. New levels have been observed in ³⁸K. and ³⁶Cl. Spins, parities and isospins have been tentatively assigned to some of them.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for experimentally investigated nuclides of mass 36 (Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca) has been evaluated. The principal sources of the ‘adopted levels’ presented for nuclides close to the stability line are Endtʼs evaluations (1990En08, 1978En02). The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma–ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. The ³⁶Na has been looked for but not yet experimentally detected. There are no data available for the excited states in ³⁶Al, and for ³⁶Mg and ³⁶Ca, only one excited state is known.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for the known nuclides of mass 38 (Mg,Al,Si,P,S,Cl,Ar,K,Ca,Sc,Ti) has been evaluated. The principal sources of the ‘adopted levels’ presented are Endt's evaluations (1990En08, 1978En02). The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma-ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. There are no data available for the excited states in ³⁸Mg, ³⁸Al and ³⁸P. Recent experiments have tried to identify ³⁸Ti nuclide but no events have been associated with this nuclide with a half-life limit of <125 ns deduced from limit on experimental cross section. This nuclide is likely to be particle unstable. No experiments have yet been reported for the identification of the ³⁸Sc nuclide which is also expected to be a prompt proton emitter.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for the known nuclides of mass 39 (Mg,Al,Si,P,S,Cl,Ar,K,Ca,Sc,Ti) has been evaluated. The principal sources of the ‘adopted levels’ presented are Endt's evaluations (1990En08, 1978En02). The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma–ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. There are no data available for the excited states in ³⁹Mg, ³⁹Al, ³⁹Si and ³⁹Ti.
Energy levels of A = 21-44 nuclei (VII)

The experimentally determined properties of A = 21–44 nuclides are complied and evaluated with special emphasis on nuclear spectroscopy.
Separate tables for each of the nuclides reviewed present the available information about the following properties (in this order):
- •
  - excitation energies E_x,
- •
  - γ-ray branching ratios b(γ),
- •
  - γ-ray mixing ratios σ,
- •
  - lifetimes γ_m or widths Λ,
- •
  - neutron, proton, or α-particle resonances,
- •
  - partial widths,
- •
  - single-nucleon transfer reactions,
- •
  - beta-decay,
- •
  - arguments for spin and parity (J^π) and isospin (T) assignments.
For each nuclide a master table summarizing the “best” or adopted values for E_x, J^π; T and τ_m or Λ precedes the auxiliary tables listed above.
The review of each A-chain concludes with a discussion of isospin multiplets.
Figures are presented of the level schemes of all nuclei and, for each A-chain, an overview of the relative energies of the ground states and lowest analogue states of all nuclei in the chain.
One-nucleon transfer reactions on 16O and 40Ca induced by 33 MeV polarized 3He

Analysing powers of the ¹⁶O³He, d)¹⁷F,¹⁶O(³He,α) ¹⁵O,⁴⁰Ca(³He,d)⁴¹Sc and ⁴⁰Ca(³He,α)³⁹Ca reactions have been measured at 33 MeV. Large effects observed in the (³He,α) reactions can be explained using a simple classical model. The analysis shows that for the closed-shell nuclei the data can be well described by conventional DWBA theory. Analysing powers of the (³He,α) reactions depend weakly on the ³He spin-orbit distortion while both ³He and deuteron spin-orbit potentials are required to describe the (³He, d) reactions.
