(p, d) Reactions induced by a polarized proton beam

Abstract

Differential cross sections and asymmetries (or analysing powers) have been measured for (p,d) reactions on ^32–34S, ⁴⁸Ca, ⁴⁹Ti, ⁵³Cr, ⁵⁷Fe, ^58–61Ni, ^90–91Zr, ⁹²Mo and ^118–119Sn nuclei, with a polarized proton beam, at energies around 20 MeV. Experimental evidence is given for the strong j-dependence of the asymmetry, for the various orbital angular momenta transferred l = 1, 2 and 3, and therefore it is shown that asymmetry measurements in (p, d) reactions, such as in (d, p) reactions, provide reliable spin assignments. DWBA predictions with optical-model potentials obtained from analysis of the elastic scattering data in both proton and deuteron channels, give reasonable fits for the measured (p, d) cross sections and asymmetries, except for the light nuclei ^32–34S. In case of transitions involving j-mixing, asymmetry measurements are used to determine the contributions of the different j-values.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=31 Isobars

Experimental nuclear spectroscopic data are evaluated for 11 known nuclides of mass 31 (F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K). Detailed evaluated information is presented for each reaction and decay experiment. Combining all the available data, recommended values are provided for energies, spins and parities, and half-lives of levels, with energies, branching ratios and multipolarities of γ radiations, and characteristics of β and α radiations in radioactive decays. ³¹P is the most extensively studied one among all nuclides via various reactions and decays, followed by ³¹S, ³¹Si, ³¹Mg and ³¹Al. Information for excited states in ³¹Ne, ³¹Na, ³¹Cl, ³¹Ar and ³¹K are limited; no excited states have yet been identified in ³¹F, even its ground-state half-life is unknown. Significant new data have become available for the structure of ³¹S, with its relevance to astrophysical applications. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation of A=31 by 2013Ou01, with literature cutoff date of Feb 15, 2013.

Experimental nuclear structure data from various reactions and decays are compiled and evaluated for all known nuclides with mass number A=48 (S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni). For each nuclide, detailed evaluated nuclear structure information is presented for each individual reaction and decay, and the best values combining all available data are recommended for spectroscopic properties, such as level energies, half-lives, γ-ray energies and intensities, decay radiations. No excited states have been identified in ⁴⁸S, ⁴⁸Cl, ⁴⁸Co and ⁴⁸Ni, among which the first three even have no measured ground-state half-lives and decay modes. For ⁴⁸Fe, a level scheme with a sequence of excited states was established for the first time from a recent one-neutron removal measurement by 2021Ya33. Data for excited states in ⁴⁸Ar, ⁴⁸K and ⁴⁸Mn remain limited; no decay scheme has been measured for ⁴⁸Ar and ⁴⁸K yet, while the decay scheme for ⁴⁸Ni is incomplete due to unobserved levels. ⁴⁸Ti is the most studied nuclide through various reactions and decays, followed by ⁴⁸V, ⁴⁰Ca, ⁴⁸Sc, and ⁴⁸Cr, among which no decay event to ⁴⁸Sc has been observed and the decay schemes for ⁴⁸V and ⁴⁸Cr are considered as incomplete. This work supersedes the previous full evaluations of A=48: 2006Bu08, 1993Bu04, 1985Al14, 1978Be01.

The nuclear structure data belonging to all nuclei with mass number A=52 have been compiled and evaluated using experimental nuclear reaction data and decay data available before July 10, 2015. This evaluaton supersedes the previous publication for this msss chain (2007Hu08, Nuclear Data Sheets 108, 773 (2007)). The data for the ε decay of ⁵²Co (104 ms) and the ε decay of ⁵²Ni (40.8 ms) are both incomplete, so new studies would be useful.

Experimental nuclear structure and decay data for all known A=91 nuclides (As, Se, Br, Kr, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd) have been evaluated. This evaluation, covering data received by 1 September 2013, supersedes the 1998 evaluation by C. M. Baglin published in Nuclear Data Sheets 86, 1 (1999) (15 December 1998 literature cutoff), and subsequent evaluations by C. M. Baglin added to the ENSDF database for Kr, Sr and Zr (29 December 2000 literature cutoff) and by B. Singh for ⁹¹Tc (6 November 2000 literature cutoff).

Nuclear spectroscopic information for the known nuclides of mass 31 (F, Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar) has been evaluated. A useful source of many of the Adopted Levels for ³¹P and ³¹S is presented in Endtʼs evaluations (1998En04,1990En08,1978En02,1973EnVA), however all the adopted properties of levels and gamma rays have been re-evaluated in this work. The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma–ray data, are based mostly on the original literature.
The 31Mg nuclide is a prime candidate for the study of ‘island-of-inversion’ as its ground state and first excited state can only be explained by intruder orbitals in a deformed shell-model approach. ³¹S is of importance in astrophysics rp-process as a possible ‘bottleneck’ nuclide. There are no data available for excited states in ³¹F, ³¹Ne and ³¹Ar. No gamma transitions are known in ³¹Cl. For ³¹Na, only one excited state is known. The radioactive decay characteristics of ³¹F and ³¹Ne isotopes have not yet been investigated. The ³¹S and ³¹Mg nuclei are currently being pursued intensively by various experimental groups, including recent work by Nuclear Astrophysics group at McMaster, the results of which will soon become available.
