Abstract

The decay of 6.5 min ⁷⁸Br has been studied with a Ge(Li) spectrometer and a Ge(Li)Nal(Tl) coincidence spectrometer. Levels in ⁷⁸Se are proposed at 613.9, 1308.3, 1498.7, 2329, 2454, 2510, 2537.9, 3090.4, 3220, 3345 and 3528 keV. Positon branchings to the first three states of ⁷⁸Se were established experimentally.

The evaluated spectroscopic data are presented for known nuclides of mass 78 (Ni,Cu,Zn,Ga,Ge,As,Se,Br,Kr,Rb,Sr,Y,Zr). Excited-state data are nonexistent for ⁷⁸Ni, ⁷⁸Cu and ⁷⁸Zr. For ⁷⁸Zr, only the isotopic identification is established without any knowledge of its half-life and decay modes. Only limited excited state data exist for ⁷⁸Y. The radioactive decays of the following isotopes are not considered by the evaluators as well established: ⁷⁸Cu, ^78mRb, ⁷⁸Sr and ⁷⁸Y. High-spin excitations are known for ⁷⁸As, ⁷⁸Se, ⁷⁸Br, ⁷⁸Kr, ⁷⁸Rb and ⁷⁸Sr. Significant amounts of new data have been added since the last NDS publication of A = 78 evaluation more than 18 years ago.
This work supersedes earlier full evaluations of A = 78 published by 1981Si13 and 1975Ru01 and the one published in ‘update’ mode by 1991Ra06.

The experimental nuclear data for mass 78 have been reviewed superseding the 1981 evaluation by Singh and Viggars (81Si13). Nuclear structure, decay and reaction properties of all the nine isobars (Zn, Ga, Ge, As, Se, Br, Kr, Rb and Sr) of mass 78 are reviewed, and an adopted data set for each nucleus is prepared with proper Jπ arguments for the levels. There is not much new information available for ⁷⁸Zn, ⁷⁸Ga, ⁷⁸Ge, ⁷⁸As and ⁷⁸Br. New data are available on heavy ion reactions for ⁷⁸Se, ⁷⁸Kr, ⁷⁸Rb and ⁷⁸Sr as well as on particle transfer studies for ⁷⁸Ge, ⁷⁸Se and ⁷⁸Kr. There are also new experimental data available in (n, γ) studies for ⁷⁸Se.

The 1966 version of Nuclear Data Sheets for A = 78 has been revised on the basis of all experimental data received before September 1, 1974. Experimental data, detailed level schemes, and arguments for J^π-assignments are presented. Two new isotopes, ⁷⁸Ga and ⁷⁸Rb, are now known to exist and a third, ⁷⁸Sr, has been tentatively identified. A significant amount of new information is given for the ⁷⁸Se, ⁷⁸Br, and ⁷⁸Kr level schemes, while very little new information is available for the level schemes of ⁷⁸Ge and ⁷⁸As.
Coulomb excitation of the even-mass selenium nuclei

The properties of the low-lying states of the doubly even selenium nuclei have been investigated via multiple Coulomb excitation effected with 39.2 MeV oxygen projectiles. The excitation probabilities of the first 2⁺ states of ⁷⁶Se, ⁷⁸Se and ⁸⁰Se have been determined directly by resolving inelastically and elastically scattered ⁴He projectiles on thin targets. These measurements yielded values of B(E2; 0⁺ → 2⁺) equal to $0.421 ± 0.009 (^{76} Se), 0.321 ± 0.009 (^{78} Se) and 0.248 ± 0.005 (^{80} Se) e^{2} · b^{2}$ . The multiple Coulomb excitation experiments enabled us to detect 2⁺ and 4⁺ levels in all isotopes studied up to 2.1 MeV. Moreover the double Coulomb excitation of 0⁺' states at 854.1 keV (⁷⁴Se), 1498.5 keV (⁷⁸Se), and 1478.3 keV (⁸⁰Se) was also observed. The enhancement of the E2 transition between these 0⁺' levels and the first 2⁺ states decreases rapidly with the increase of the neutron number, i.e., $B(E 2; 0^{+} ′ → 2^{+})/B(E 2; 2^{+} → 0^{+}) = 2.04 ± 0.08 (^{74} Se), 0.91 ± 0.08 (^{78} Se), and 0.28 ± 0.04 (^{80} Se)$ . States interpreted as the result of direct E3 Coulomb excitation have been observed at 2350.2, 2429.2, 2507.6, and 2717.6 keV in ⁷⁴Se, ⁷⁶Se, ⁷⁸Se and ⁸⁰Se, respectively. Their B(E3; 0⁺ → 3⁻) values are $2.1 ± 0.5 (^{74} Se), 4.0 ± 0.5 (^{76} Se), 2.7±0.3 (^{78} Se) and 0.9 ± 0.2 ( × 10^{−2} e^{2} · b^{3}$ which represent enhancements of 9.2 ± 2.2, 16.6 ± 2.1, 10.8 ± 1.2 and 3.2 ± 0.7 respectively. Furthermore, angular distribution measurements of γ-rays following Coulomb excitation with 42 MeV ¹⁶O ions in ⁷⁸Se and ⁸⁰Se have been performed. The E2 content of the 2⁺' → 2⁺ transition in these two nuclei is 87.9 % (⁷⁸Se), and 96.2 % or 33.5 % (⁸⁰Se).
Level structure of <sup>78</sup>Se

Gamma-transitions in ⁷⁸Se following the β⁺ decay of ⁷⁸Br have been studied using Ge(Li) detectors. Twenty γ-rays of which five were previously unreported, were assigned to this decay, while five previously reported transitions were not confirmed. The half-life was determined as $t_{12} = 6.46±0.04 min$ . The level energies were determined from inelastic proton scattering and a detailed comparison with the level structure deduced from ⁷⁸As decay and reaction data has been made. The 1498.5 keV and 1502.2 keV levels are identified as the first 0⁺ and 4⁺ levels respectively, and the octupole 3⁻ state was found at 2507.9 keV.
