Abstract

The pairing vibrational states near N = 82 were investigated by means of (p, t) reactions on the even-mass Ce isotopes of A = 140 and 142. Strong L = 0 and 2 transitions to the expected vibrational states were observed.

Experimental nuclear structure data from various reactions and decays are compiled and evaluated for all known nuclides with mass number A=138 (Sn,Sb,Te,I,Xe,Cs,Ba,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Pm,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb). Detailed evaluated nuclear structure information is presented for each reaction and decay and the best values combining all available data are recommended for level energies, half-lives, γ-ray energies and intensities, decay properties (energies, intensities and placement of radiations), and other spectroscopic properties. This work supersedes the previous full evaluation of A=138 by A.A. Sonzogni (2003So13).
New 0+ states in 146Sm from a (p,t) experiment and the particle-core coupling model

The reaction ¹⁴⁸Sm(p,t)¹⁴⁶Sm was studied at E_p = 26 MeV. Fifty-six excited states in the final N = 84 nucleus were observed below E_exc = 4.2 MeV and their angular distributions were measured at 8 angles. Spin and parity assignments are made for 37 of them, based on the determination of the transferred angular momentum L. Ten excited J^π = 0⁺ states were identified. The emerging excitation energies of the J^π = 0⁺ states and the monopole strength distribution in ¹⁴⁶Sm are compared with those observed in nearby nuclei and with results of calculations done in the framework of the Particle-Core Coupling Model. The main features of the experimental results are interpreted using a superposition of two types of configurations: two-particle states coupled to the collective excitations of the N = 82 core and two holes coupled to the collective excitations of the N = 86 core. Calculations show also that two-phonon⊗two-particle configurations are spread over many states and their identification becomes difficult.
Ground-state transition strengths of the (p, t) reactions for nuclei with A = 23-238

Differential cross sections at the first peak of L = 0 angular distributions of ground-state transitions in (p, t) reactions have been measured with a 51.9 MeV proton beam for target nuclei with A = 23–238. Distinct shell-closure effects were observed at N = 28, 50, 82 and 126, but not discernible at N = 20. The transition strengths exhibit maxima at the middle of the major shells except for the region of well-deformed nuclei, where the strengths are appreciably smaller than those for the spherical or vibrational nuclei. The results are compared with the predictions of the interacting boson approximation model (IBA) and with DWBA calculations using form factors deduced from the BCS wave functions.

The experimental data are evaluated; inconsistencies and discrepancies are noted; and adopted values for level and gamma-ray energies, gamma intensities, and other nuclear properties are given. All data received before December 1975 have been included.
Investigations with two-neutron transfer reactions on the even isotopes of samarium

The (p, t) reaction on the even isotopes of samarium has been investigated at a proton energy of 25.5 MeV. Angular distributions were obtained in the range 18° ≦ θ ≦ 148° with angular steps between 2° and 5°. The experimental energy resolution varied between 35 keV and 50 keV FWHM. Spin and parity assignments are performed by comparing the measured angular distributions to zero-range DWBA calculations. Some difficulties of DWBA calculations for (p, t) reactions are pointed out. The relative cross sections for transitions to different levels of the final nuclei are compared with other (p, t) and (t, p) measurements in the same region of the rare earth isotopes. The dependence of the (p, t) cross sections for different transitions on the neutron number of the final nuclei is discussed. Some 2⁺ states observed in (p, t) and (t, p) reactions are described in the quadrupole pairing vibrational picture.
