Abstract

A kinematically complete experiment has been performed in which alpha-neutron angular correlation measurements were recorded at an incident deuteron energy of 1.0 MeV. As in previous experiments, the results show that the yield is dominated by sequential decay through the 5He ground state and the 8Be first excited state. An observed asymmetry of the 5He decay products about the system centre-of-mass recoil direction can be explained on the basis of compound nucleus formation. In particular, the results suggest a possible spin and parity assignment of 32+ for the level at 17.48 MeV excitation in the 9Be compound nucleus.
