Study of the proton shell closure of 208Pb through the 205Tl(p, 3He)204Hg reaction

Abstract

Precise relative measurements of the reactions 208Pb(p, 3He)207Tl and 205Tl(p, 3He)204Hg were carried out at 52 MeV for a combined analysis with similar data from the 206Pb(d, 3He)205Tl reaction. Linking the resulting spectroscopic factors with the charge density difference of 205T1 and 206Pb by means of a sum rule we determined the 3s proton occupancy in 208Pb in a way which minimizes the influence of the reaction mechanisms. The result is 0.92±0.19. Together with a similar value from our complementary (e, e′p) experiments we obtain a weighted average of 0.88±0.15. This indicates a smaller depletion of the valence shells by short-range and tensor correlations than predicted by some theoretical approaches.
