Even Zn isotopes in the cluster-vibration model

Abstract

Even-A nuclear systems with two protons in the 28–50 valence shell (even Zn isotopes) are described in the cluster-vibration model. Energy spectra and electromagnetic properties are calculated and their qualitative features are discussed with emphasis on the coexistence between quasivibrational and quasirotational characteristics. The influence of possible cubic anharmonicities and of the presence of the $g_{92}$ configuration are investigated. For some states, pairing phonons are recognized as intrinsic building blocks created in the cluster-vibration model. The relation between this approach and recent shell-model calculations is discussed.

Magnetic moments and nuclear structure

We review the principal advances and results of magnetic moment measurements for short-lived nuclear states. The latest variants of the technique combine projectile Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics with intense transient magnetic hyperfine fields. A number of the measurements described were performed in collaboration with the Rutgers University group. Data spanning the range from neon to neodymium nuclei have provided new insights into the nuclear structure of the states in question. The results are discussed in terms of advanced microscopic calculations within the framework of the nuclear shell model. The highly improved experimental accuracy permits critical testing of appropriate configuration spaces of valence nucleons, as well as effective NN interactions derived for these spaces. The applicability of the method to next-generation g-factor measurements on exotic, radioactive projectiles and their eventual theoretical implications is assessed.
Structure of 66Ga from (p, nγ) reaction

γ-ray, γγ-coincidence, and internal conversion electron spectra were measured with Ge(HP), as well as superconducting and traditional magnetic lens plus Si(Li) electron spectrometers at different bombarding proton energies between 6.5 and 7.1 MeV. Energies and relative intensities of 131 (among them 52 new) ⁶⁶Ga γ-rays have been determined. Internal conversion coefficients of 33 transitions were measured for the first time. A more complete level scheme with new levels, γ-ray branching ratios, level spin and parity values has been deduced. The energy spectrum and electromagnetic properties were calculated on the basis of an interacting boson-fermion-fermion/truncated quadrupole phonon model for odd-odd nuclei. The model calculations reasonably describe the level spectra and electromagnetic properties of ⁶⁴Zn, ⁶⁵Ga, ⁶⁵Zn and ⁶⁶Ga nuclei with consistent parametrization.

The evaluated spectroscopic data are presented for eight known nuclides of mass 64 (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge). Excited-state data are nonexistent for ⁶⁴Mn and ⁶⁴Fe. Very little information is available for ⁶⁴Ge and γ-ray data are scarce for ⁶⁴Co and ⁶⁴Ni. Some high-spin data are available for ⁶⁴Ga and ⁶⁴Ge, in spite of several in-beam γ-ray experiments on ⁶⁴Zn and ⁶⁴Cu. Further work on ⁶⁴Zn and ⁶⁴Ga seems to be in progress at Daresbury (90LiZS) through heavy-ion reactions. Radioactive decay data for ⁶⁴Mn are not available and those for ⁶⁴Fe, ⁶⁴Co and ⁶⁴Ge are not considered definitive.
Electromagnetic decay of excited 0+ states in 64, 66, 68Zn

The E0 and E2 transitions depopulating the excited 0⁺ states in ^64,66,68Zn are investigated. Several methods of γ-ray, conversion-electron and internal-pair spectrometry are employed, including a new time measurement technique. A total of 5 E0 transitions are observed and the monopole strengths ρ²(0_i⁺ → 0_i⁺) for most of them are extracted. The results and the nature of the excited 0⁺ states are discussed in terms of several nuclear models.
Coexistence in odd-mass nuclei

Shape coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near closed shells (±1 and ±3 nucleons) is reviewed. Two main approaches are presented. The more historical one starts from the explicit introduction of a deformation degree of freedom and allows particular Nilsson orbitals to occur very low in excitation energy. A second approach starts from spherical particle-hole (p-h) excitations across a closed shell and allows interactions with quadrupole vibrations of the underlying core nucleus. The equivalence between the two approaches is discussed in some detail. Attention is given also to other approaches to the description of coexistence. A detailed review of the experimental evidence for coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near the Z = 28, 50, 82 and N = 28, 50, 82 closed shells is made. In addition, the fingerprints of coexisting states, i.e. the most pronounced nuclear structure properties characterizing such states, are presented. These fingerprints provide a necessary (though not sufficient) set of conditions for identifying coexistence throughout the nuclear mass table. At the end, we briefly describe the connection of the present study to other areas of nuclear structure such as related configurations in doubly-even nuclei, many-particle many-hole excitations, deep-lying hole states, and the possibility of incorporating these degrees of freedom into an Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) framework. A major conclusion of this review is that there is a clear connection between shape coexistence and shell-model intruder states. A variety of topics is suggested for future experimental and theoretical investigation.
Disproof of the alleged two-phonon character of the 0+<inf>2</inf> state in 64Zn

A study of electromagnetic transitions from the 0⁺₂ and 0⁺₃ states in ⁶⁴Zn clearly shows that the quadrupole-phonon model is insufficient for this nucleus. All reported shell-model, cluster-vibration-model and advanced IBA calculations also fail to reproduce the decay branching ratios from the 0⁺₂ state. However, they are qualitatively explained by the O(6) limit of the IBA and fairly well quantitatively by a six-parameter IBA-1 fit.
