Abstract

Experimental advances have made it possible to explore Gamow-Teller (GT) strength functions over the full excitation energy range associated with shell model nuclear particle-hole states. It is found that giant GT resonances exist quite generally and the excitation energy of the centroid is near that of the isobaric analog state. The integrated strength over the whole observed strength function is found to be typically only about half of the minimum required strength for the neutron excess of the parent state. This is a serious failure of ordinary nuclear models and seems to indicate a significant coupling of nucleon structure into nuclear structure.
