Abstract

The ²⁴Mg(¹⁶O, ¹⁶O'γ)²⁴Mg(2⁺) reaction has been investigated at 42 MeV incident energy. In-plane (¹⁶O, γ) angular correlations were measured for outgoing ¹⁶O ions between 6° and 40°. The results are compared with DWBA and coupled channels calculations.

Reaction mechanism and spin information in the sequential breakup of 18O at 82 MeV

The α-decays of states in ¹⁸O have been studied in the sequential breakup reaction $^{12} C (^{18} O,^{18} O^{∗} →^{14} C α)$ at 82MeV. Double-differential cross sections have been obtained for the states excited in ¹⁸O. A conventional analysis of the decay correlations does not yield unambiguous information on the spins of the states excited. However a systematic dependence of the correlations on the angle of the ¹⁸O^∗ in the c.m. frame is observed, allowing the determination of the transferred angular momentum. The double-differential cross sections have been analysed with the DWBA and a strong absorption model. The latter allows the extraction of quantitative information on spins and reaction mechanism from the data.

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 120 MeV 18O from 208Pb and the spin alignment of the 2+ state of 18O

The elastic and inelastic scattering of ¹⁸O ions at 120 MeV from a target of ²⁰⁸Pb have been studied. Cross sections for excitation of the 2⁺ state at 1.982 MeV in ¹⁸O and of the 3⁻ state at 2.61 MeV in ²⁰⁸Pb were measured. In addition, the populations of the m-substates for the ¹⁸O excitation were deduced from the Doppler-broadened line shapes. The data were subjected to a coupled-channels analysis using either Woods-Saxon or folding-model potentials. In addition, the ¹⁸O excitation was found to be described very well by use of a semi-microscopic model. The analyses consistently indicated the presence of a positive static hexadecapole moment of several e · fm⁴ for the 2⁺ state of ¹⁸O. The m-substate population distributions were found to be better fitted if a vector spin-orbit coupling was introduced for the 2⁺ state of ¹⁸O with a sign opposite to that for the nucleon-nucleus case.
Energy levels of A = 21-44 nuclei (VI)

The experimentally determined properties of the A = 21–44 nuclei are compiled and evaluated, special emphasis being given to nuclear structure.
Separate tables for each of the nuclides reviewed give all available information about the following properties in this order: - excitation energies (E_x),

  - γ-ray mixing ratios (δ),
3. •
  - lifetimes (τ_m) or widths (Λ),

  - spin and parity (J^π) and isospin (T) assignments, and

The “best” (or adopted) values for E_x, τ_m or Λ, J^π and T are summarized in a master table.
The review of each A-chain concludes with - a discussion of isospin multiplets,

  - a compilation of references to relevant theoretical papers.
Inelastic scattering of heavy ions from deformed light nuclei at near-barrier energies

Angular distributions have been measured at energies near the Coulomb barrier for the systems ¹⁸O + ²⁴Mg, ¹²C + ²⁸Si and ^{16, 18}O + ²⁸Si for elastic scattering and inelastic scattering to the first 2⁺ states in ¹⁸O, ²⁴Mg and ²⁸Si. Coupled-channel calculations were required in order to reproduce the details of the strong Coulomb-nuclear interference minima. However, a satisfactory account of the main features of the data was obtained in a first-order DWBA analysis and with the closed formalism of Frahn. With the exception of ¹⁸O, it was sufficient to assume equal charge and optical-potential deformation lengths.
