Abstract

The longitudinal polarization of β particles has been investigated at very low velocities by performing absolute measurements on the allowed decay of tritium at energies between 5.5 and 16 keV (0.15 < υc < 0.25). After preselection of energy, the electrons were accelerated to a fixed final energy of 79 keV. The polarization was observed with a calibrated Mott polarimeter. Various checks on instrumental asymmetries have been performed. It has been shown that the depolarization in the source was small near the 18.6 keV end-point energy of the tritium spectrum. The final result, P(3H) = −(1.005 ± 0.026)υc at 15.2 keV (υc = 0.24), confirms the relation P = −υc down to much lower energies than before. We propose to disregard hitherto unexplained deviations of the degree of polarization for other allowed decays at velocities less than 0.6 c. Some remarks are made about the ratios CVCV and CACA of coupling constants for weak interactions.
