Abstract

The y-rays emitted after thermal neutron capture in 142 Nd have been investigated and their energies and intensities measured in the energy range of 0.1 to 5.6 MeV, using a three crystal Ge(Li)Nal(Tl) spectrometer. The γ-γ coincidences for low energy γ-rays have also been studied with Ge(Li) detectors. Of a total of 343 γ-transitions assigned to 143Nd, 175 have been fitted into a level scheme which incorporates 44 excited states out of which at least 13 are reported for the first time. Spin and parity values for most of the levels are proposed. The Q-value for the 142Nd(n, γ)143Nd reaction is estimated to be 6122.7 ± 0.5 keV. Correlation between (d, p) and (n, γ) strengths is examined.
