Proton inclusive cross sections from 720 MeV α-nucleus reactions

Abstract

Proton inclusive cross sections have been measured from 30°–150° (lab) for outgoing energies up to 500 MeV from the bombardment of 720 MeV α-particles on Al and Ta. An exhaustive survey of applicable models indicates that the intranuclear cascade and knock-out models provide the best description of the data. Single scattering mechanisms seem to be important, and there is some indirect evidence that high nuclear density effects occur.

The experimentally determined properties of A = 21–44 nuclides are complied and evaluated with special emphasis on nuclear spectroscopy.
Separate tables for each of the nuclides reviewed present the available information about the following properties (in this order):

  - excitation energies E_x,
- •
  - γ-ray branching ratios b(γ),
- •
  - γ-ray mixing ratios σ,
- •
  - lifetimes γ_m or widths Λ,
- •
  - neutron, proton, or α-particle resonances,
- •
  - partial widths,
- •
  - single-nucleon transfer reactions,
- •
  - beta-decay,
- •
  - arguments for spin and parity (J^π) and isospin (T) assignments.
For each nuclide a master table summarizing the “best” or adopted values for E_x, J^π; T and τ_m or Λ precedes the auxiliary tables listed above.
The review of each A-chain concludes with a discussion of isospin multiplets.
Figures are presented of the level schemes of all nuclei and, for each A-chain, an overview of the relative energies of the ground states and lowest analogue states of all nuclei in the chain.
Effect of correlations on the momentum distribution of protons in 208Pb

The momentum distribution of protons in ²⁰⁸Pb is investigated in the framework of a model in which the ground-state wave function is specified by the occupation probabilities of shell-model orbits. Three main cases are considered: (i) the Hartree-Fock approximation (uncorrelated case), (ii) the random-phase approximation associated with long-range correlations, (iii) the case including short-, medium- and long-range as well as tensor correlations. The three cases yield similar results for momenta smaller than 1.6 fm⁻¹, but the medium- and short-range and tensor correlations increase by several orders of magnitude the probability of finding a proton with momentum larger than 1.6 fm⁻¹ in the nuclear ground state. These features are in semi-quantitative agreement with those previously found in lighter nuclei by using the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock, the Jastrow and the exp(S) approaches, and also with results obtained in the limit of nuclear matter. They considerably differ from those derived from two simple local-density approximations. The calculated momentum distributions are compared with empirical results.
Fast particle emission from nuclear reactions

The emission of fast particles from continuum states being populated in energetic nuclear reactions is investigated within the framework of different models. Typical bombarding energies range from 20 to 100 MeV per nucleon.
The investigation starts with one-step and multistep quantum-mechanical approaches, followed by semi-classical models, especially the exciton model, which can be derived from the quantum-mechanical approaches. Because of its transparency it allows one to study the effects of different approximations. All models need residual interactions having volume integrals larger than those necessary to describe scattering to bound states.
Next to the analysis of different types of data in the framework of an extended exciton model, different approaches for complex particle emission were discussed. It is possible to extend the exciton model to include pickup of target nucleons, pickup among recoiling nucleons (coalescence) and even emission of preformed clusters. In any case additional model parameters become necessary. None of thes extensions has so far been able to reproduce data over a large range of energies and projectile mass numbers without model parameter variation. However, the exciton coalescence model reproduces exclusive data from coincidence measurements.
