Abstract

In the neutron-proton IBA model magnetic dipole matrix elements are derived for γ → γ and γ → g.s.b. transitions using a slightly broken neutron-proton (F-spin) symmetry. The magnitude of the B(M1) values in a given nucleus as well as their variation with N and Z depends on the details of the symmetry breaking terms. A qualitative description of the experimental data is obtained.
