Abstract

The beta and gamma radiations of 162Tb have been investigated employing scintillation and semiconductor spectrometers and coincidence techniques. Sources were produced by the 162Dy(n, p) and 165Ho(n, α) reactions. A half-life of 7.6 min has been measured without evidence for an isomeric state in the half-life range of 2 sec to 8 d. The energies (in keV) and relative intensities (in parentheses) of the gamma rays are 81 (≈ 9), 185 (complex, 17+3.3), 260 (100), 622(1.2), 697(3.0), 807(57), 882(15), 888(50), 1067(0.8), 1194(0.13) and 1275(0.11). Beta-decay branches of 2.4 MeV (≈ 0.4%, log ft=8.3), 1.5% (≈ 5%, 6.4), 1.25 (94%, 4.8) and 1.1 (0.2%, 7.2) have been found, the 2.4 MeV branch leads to the ground state of 162Dy. A spin and parity of 1 is deduced for the ground state of 162Tb. Levels of 162Dy at 81, 266, 888, 963, 1148 and 1275 keV are populated in the decay of 162Tb. The first four levels belong to the ground state and to the gamma-vibrational band. The level at 1148 keV is interpreted as a K, Iπ = 2, 2 state with a high contribution of the two-proton quasi-particle state [411↑-523↑], the level at 1275 keV as a collective 0, 1 state.
