Abstract

Angular distributions of the proton polarization in p-d elastic scattering have been measured at Ep = 11, 14.5, 17.5, 20.15 and 22.7 MeV, in the angular range θc.m. = 20°−155°. At 11, 17.5 and 22.7 MeV the angular range was extended forward by detecting the scattered protons with a 180° magnetic spectrometer, but no evidence was found for negative polarizations at small angles. The positive maximum at θc.m. ≈ 130° moves slowly backwards with increasing energy; its height increases up to 15 MeV where it saturates at a value of 0.22. The negative minimum at θc.m. ≈ 110° appears at 17.5 MeV, moves also backwards with a depth increasing linearly with energy. Using the available experimental data, a contour map of the proton polarization in p-d elastic scattering is given in the energy range of 0–50 MeV.

Excitation curves of the polarization and asymmetry of protons elastically and inelastically (from the 4.43 MeV excited state) scattered from 12C at a laboratory scattering angle of 55° were also measured in the energy range of 11 to 20 MeV.
