Neutron pickup reactions on the even palladium isotopes and the deeply bound hole-state excitation

Abstract

Neutron pickup was studied on all stable even-A Pd isotopes via the (d, t) reaction at E_d = 50J, S, and single-particle centroid energies. MeV and the (³He, α) reaction at E_3He = 70 MeV. A systematic study of the de region is made. From a decomposition of angular distributions we obtain spectroseopic strength distributions for the $1 g_{92}$ , $2 p_{12}$ , $2 P_{32}$ and $1 f_{52}$ Subshells which exha rules. Complete studies of the ^{102, 104}Pd(d, t)^{101, 103}Pd reactions are presented for pickup from the valence shells. For all isotopes spectroscopic information on the strongest transitions to low-lying states is obtained.

Evaluated nuclear structure and decay data for all nuclei with mass number A = 109 (Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Tc, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, Te, I, Xe) are presented. The experimental data are compiled and evaluated, and the best values for level and gamma-ray energies, quantum numbers, lifetimes, gamma-ray intensities, and other nuclear properties are recommended. Inconsistencies and discrepancies that exist in the literature are noted. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation by J. Blachot (2006Bl02), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 107, 355 (2006).

The 2001 evaluation on mass A = 103 (2001De37) has been revised, taking into account all data available before March 2009. Experimental information is presented from the neutron rich nucleus ¹⁰³Sr to the neutron deficient ¹⁰³Sn nucleus. The experimental information on excited states for ¹⁰³Sr and ¹⁰³y is very scarce New (HI, xnγ) data sets for several nuclides have been evaluated and new and more accurate data for γ intensities and multipolarities obtained. The BRICC code has been used for the calculation of conversion coefficients.

Damping of high-lying single-particle modes in heavy nuclei

The recent experimental and theoretical results on the damping of high-lying single-particle modes in heavy nuclei are reviewed. In one-nucleon transfer reactions these states manifest themselves as broad “resonance”-like structures superimposed on a large continuum. The advantages and the limitations of the transfer reaction approach will be presented using the results from neutron and proton pick-up and stripping reactions. The problem raised by the subtraction of the underlying background, the assumptions made to describe the reaction process and the method used to extract the strength distributions are presented. The existing empirical systematics is summarized for nuclei ranging from ⁹⁰Zr to ²⁰⁸Pb.
The theoretical approaches used to explain the damping of the high-lying single-particle modes are based on the coupling between collective and single-particle degrees of freedom. In a first step the bare single-particle mode is spread over several doorway collective states due to the interaction with surface vibrations. In a second step the doorway states spread their strengths over many other degrees of freedom. These two steps of the damping mechanism are discussed in detail within the framework of the quasiparticle-phonon nuclear model. A large-scale comparison between the measured and calculated average energies, spreading widths and spectroscopic strengths of the high-lying single-particle (hole) states in heavy nuclei is presented. The systematic features of the damping (energy, angular momentum and isotopic dependence) are discussed. Recent advances of the experimental approaches, such as the γ-decay of the high-lying states or the use of heavy-ion transfer reactions at intermediate energies, are outlined.
The detailed study of the damping mechanism of high-lying single-particle modes reveals new features and leads us to a new field in nuclear structure: “the spectroscopy of inner and outer subshells”.
γ-decay of the deeply-bound hole states in 101Pd, 105Pd, 107Pd, 111Sn, 117Sn observed in the (3He, αγ) reaction at 70 MeV

The γ-decay of deep-hole states in ^{101, 105, 107}Pd was studied via the (³He, αγ) reaction at E_³he = 70 MeV and supplemented by data from ^{112, 118}Sn targets to investigate the deep-hole spreading mechanism. The γ-decay pattern for the $g_{92}$ deep-hole state shows a strong dependence on the spreading width: if the deep-hole state is observed as a sharp peak, it mainly decays to the low-lying $72^{+}$ state by a spin-flip M1 transition with a large M1-E2 mixing ratio; if the deep-hole state is observed as a broad bump, it decays statistically indicating the complete spreading of the hole strength over the underlying states; if the deep-hole state is observed with a structure intermediate between a sharp peak and broad bump, its γ-decay shows both decay patterns.
A sharp peak at E_x = 2.396 MeV in ¹⁰¹Pd which carries a large fraction of the $g_{92}$ hole strength (C²S = 2.0) was found to be a single state having a width of less than 2.5 keV.
For the spin-flip M1 transition the destructive interference between the $g_{92}$ component and the coupled components of the deep-hole state was found in heavily spread states.
A quasiparticle-plus-rotor (QPR) model was applied to calculate the fragmentation in the doorway stage for the $g_{92}$ neutron deep-hole state in the Pd isotopes. A reasonable agreement between the calculation and the experimental results was obtained for the strength fragmentation, for the nucleus ¹⁰¹Pd. However, the large M1-E2 mixing ratio experimentally observed was not reproduced.
