Abstract

The mean life of the 8.88 MeV state in 16O has been measured using the particle-gamma coincidence form of the Doppler-shift-attenuation method. The value obtained is (1.92±0.29) × 10−13 sec. Detailed calculations relating to the Doppler-shift measurement were made for the stopping and scattering of the 16O recoil nuclei in the target and backing material. The partial widths of the gamma-ray transitions determined from the present mean-life measurement and the branching and mixing ratios known from other experiments were compared with the predictions of the independent particle model. Experimental B(E2) values were compared to the calculated B(E2) on the assumption that the 8.88 MeV state forms part of a K = 1 rotational band.
