The level scheme of 176Lu investigated by (n, γ) and (n, e) reactions

Abstract

The excited levels of ¹⁷⁶Lu have been studied using the conversion electron and γ-spectra from slow neutron capture in ¹⁷⁵Lu measured with the β-spectrograph at Riga and with the diffraction spectrometer at Risø. The proposed level scheme contains the rotational bands with the following lowest levels E, I^π K and Nilsson configurations: $126 keV, 1^{−} 0, p 72^{+} [404]− n 72^{−} [514]$ ; $198 keV, 1^{+} 1, p 72^{+} [404]− n 92^{+} [624]; 342 keV, 1^{+} 1, p 92^{−} [514]−n 72^{−} [514]; 390 keV, 1^{−} 1, p 72^{+} [404]− 52^{−} [512]; 638 keV, 4^{+} 4, p 12^{−} [541]+ n 72^{−} [514]; 641 keV, 1^{−} 1, p 52^{+} [402]−n 72^{−} [514]; 660 keV, 5^{+} 5, p 92^{−} [514]+ n 12^{−} [510]; 662 keV, 3^{−} 3, p 72^{+} [404]−n 12^{−} [510]; 726 keV, 4^{−} 4, p 12^{+} [411]+ n 72^{−} [514]$ . The bands with 0 keV, 7⁻7, $p 72^{+} [404]+ n 72^{−} [514]$ and 404 keV, 8⁺8, $p 72^{+} [404]+ n 92^{+} [624]$ , can be discussed only on the basis of earlier (d, p) and (d, d′) reaction data.

This evaluation presents data for all nuclei with mass number A = 176, which includes level schemes deduced from radioactive decay and nuclear reaction studies.
A level at 838.64 keV 5 (Jπ=5−) in¹⁷⁶Lu was confirmed by¹⁷⁵Lu(n,γ) E=thermal (91Kl02) and¹⁷⁶Yb(p,nγ) (91Le28) studies. This level provides a path for transformation of¹⁷⁶Lu(E=0.0, T_1/2=4.0×10¹⁰y) into¹⁷⁶Lu(E=122.855 keV 6, T_1/2=3.664 hr.) during a hot bath in the stellar s-process environment. Consequently, the production of¹⁷⁶Lu becomes a sensitive function of temperature, thus, this isotope cannot be used as an s-process chronometer.

Spectroscopic data for all nuclei with mass number A=176 have been evaluated, and the corresponding level schemes from radioactive decay and reaction studies are presented.
A new and more precise excitation energy of 123.0 keV 14 for ¹⁷⁶Lu(3.635 h) measured in ¹⁷⁷Hf(t,α) (81De28) and in agreement with a preliminary value of 122.9 keV 2, from ¹⁷⁶Yb(p,nγ) (89LeZZ), may have significance with regard to the production of ¹⁷⁶Lu isomers in stellar environment. A tentative level at 838.4 keV in ¹⁷⁶Lu, observed in ¹⁷⁶Yb(p,nγ), deexcites through both ¹⁷⁶Lu isomers and provides a path for their production by the s-process in stellar environment.
This evaluation for A=176 supersedes the earlier one by D. J. Horen and B. Harmatz (76Ho18), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 19, 383 (1976).
Neutron-capture gamma rays below 40 keV

A review of neutron-capture gamma ray measurements below 40 keV is given and experimental methods are discussed. New experiments with a Si(Li) detector have been performed. Energies and absolute intensities of low energy (n, γ) transitions in ²⁸Al, ⁴⁰K, ⁵²V, ¹²⁸I, ¹³⁴Cs, ¹⁶⁰Tb, ¹⁶⁶Ho, ¹⁷⁰Tm, ¹⁷⁶Lu, ¹⁸²Ta, ¹⁹²Ir, ¹⁹⁸Au and ²³³Th are presented. These new results can serve calibration purposes and provide nuclear structure information.
Odd-even staggering in the K = 1, 2, 3 and 4 rotational bands of deformed odd-odd nuclei

An analysis of the rotational structure of the $K = |Ω_{p} − Ω_{n} |$ bands in the odd-odd nuclei from the rare earth region reveals an odd-even staggering in the level energies. Such an odd-even effect is present, sometimes very prominently, in almost all the K⁻ bands with K values ranging from 1 to 4. We find that complete Coriolis coupling calculations are able to explain most of the staggering in the four nuclei studied. However, the K = 2⁺ and K = 4⁻ bands in ¹⁸²Re cannot be explained satisfactory.
Levels in <sup>154</sup>Eu populated by (n, γ) and (d, p) reactions

The structure of the doubly-odd nucleus ¹⁵⁴Eu was investigated using neutron capture and (d, p) reactions on ¹⁵³Eu. The low-energy γ-ray and conversion electron spectra from thermal neutron capture, as well as the γ-ray spectrum for primary energies up to 6.5 MeV, were measured with precision instruments at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble. The multipolarities were determined for most of the detected low-energy transitions. The (n_res, γ_high) spectrum measurements with 2 keV, 2 eV and 3 eV neutrons were performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory for primary transitions leading to the 0–600 keV excitation energies. The ¹⁵³Eu(d, p)¹⁵⁴Eu reaction was measured with the Q3D spectrograph at TU Munich. A level scheme below 600 keV excitation energy comprising 99 levels was deduced and the parities and most probable spin values were determined from the experimental data. The low-lying levels were interpreted as due to the two-particle Nilsson configurations, taking into account the proton orbits $52^{+} [413], 52^{−} [532], 32^{+} [411]$ , and the neutron orbits $112^{−} [505], 32^{+} [651], 32^{−} [521], 32^{−} [532], 52^{+} [642], 32^{+} [402], 52^{−} [523], 12^{+} [400], 12^{−} [530]$ . The 145.3 (± 0.3) keV level observed in the (d, p) reaction can be identified with the isomeric level with $T_{12} = 46 min$ . The neutron separation energy for ¹⁵⁴Eu was determined to be 6442.0 ± 0.3 keV.
