A shell-model description of intruder states and shape coexistence

Abstract

The appearance of low-lying core excitations in nuclei near single closed-shell configurations is discussed in even-even, odd-mass and doubly-odd nuclei. The concept of shell-model intruder states is shown to be a general phenomenon throughout the whole nuclear mass region.
