Abstract

The β+ strength functions for the β+ decay of the proton-rich nuclei 32Ar, 33Ar and 36Ca are studied using shell-model wave functions. A resonance-like structure in the strength function is calculated to be positioned about 3 MeV above the state that is the isobaric analogue state of the ground state of the decaying nucleus. A comparison with available data for A = 33 reveals a hindrance of strength in this resonance region of a factor of 2–3, in accordance with information from other spin-flip probes. The calculations for A = 32 and 36 indicate that these systems possess a Jπ; T = 1+; 1) Gamow-Teller resonance based on the Jπ; T = 0+; 2 state of the system.
