Abstract

We report on results from neutron TOF spectroscopy after π capture in 12C, 59Co and 197Au. Neutron energy spectra, 1 < En < 150 MeV, show distinct evaporative and direct parts, the latter differing neither in spectral distribution nor in integrated yield for the three targets. Nuclear temperature parameters, and the total and direct neutron multiplicities are θ = 2.71, 2.41 and 1.65 MeV, χt = 2.12(16), 4.04(24) and 6.31(36) n/π, and χd = 1.45(10), 1.38(11) and 1.32(10) n/π, for 12C, 59Co and 197Au, respectively. All angular correlations are peaked at 180°. The absolute yield for correlated neutron emission is the same for the three targets. Widths of the angular correlations and nn′ correlation probabilities are δθ(12)nn′ = 30°, 45° and 50°, for 12C, 59Co and 197Au, respectively, and Wnn′ = 0.13(2), 0.12(3) and 0.14(3) nn′/π; En, En′ ≧ 15 MeV. neutron multiplicities are in agreement with statistical model calculations and with experimental data, obtained from in-beam and activation-γ analysis after π capture.
