Abstract

The theoretical description of heavy ion charge exchange reactions is discussed. The nuclear states are described by quasi-particle and RPA-methods so that transfer and direct charge exchange processes can be analysed in compatible models for a wide class of systems. Results for charge exchange reactions at low and intermediate incident energies EA≦100 MeV per nucleon are discussed.

In all laboratories around the world in which beams of exotic nuclei are created, the scientific program always contains a large section devoted to reactions of astrophysical interest and actually nuclear astrophysics is one of the driving forces behind all Nuclear Physics studies. It is impossible to describe such a rich variety of interests and activities in a few lines, therefore I prefer to address the readers to a number of more or less recent review papers discussing highlights in experimental and theoretical advances in determining the properties of exotic nuclei relevant for reliable studies of astrophysical objects such as supernovae, novae, X-ray bursters and neutron stars [342–347]. Indeed exotic nuclei play an essential role in the dynamics and nucleosynthesis of many stars and in the core-collapse and thermonuclear supernovae, novae, X-ray bursters and mass-accreting neutron stars in binary systems.
