Collective flow and pion production at diogene

Abstract

Recent results from the large solid angle detector “DIOGENE” at Saturne (Saclay), for Ne + A and Ar + A reactions at 400, 600 and 800 MeV per nucleon are presented. Several points are selected: 1) The particles azimuthal emission pattern (with respect to the reaction plane) exhibiting preferential out-of-plane emission at c.m. rapidities, 2) The presence of an appreciable amount of collective flow for asymmetric systems and even for (rather) small projectile masses, 3) The first measurements of “flow” and multiplicities for both positive and negative pions, 4) The first measurement of deltas in central relativistic heavy ion collisions.

About resonance signal extraction from multiparticle data: combinatorics and event mixing methods

The question of the resonance signal extraction from the invariant mass distribution of two particles is examined for the experimental situation of multiparticle events measured in a large acceptance detector. The different contributions to the distribution are calculated. Their magnitude is related to the particle pair combinatorics. The consequences for the resonance extraction methods based on event mixing are given. The situation is investigated in the framework of a simulation for relativistic heavy ion collisions. Finally, the formalism developed for one kind of resonance decaying in two different particles is generalized to other cases.
Theoretical description of particle production in heavy-ion reactions at intermediate energies

We review here the investigation of particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies. The dynamical evolution of the nucleus-nucleus collisions is simulated by quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) and the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) equation as well as their relativistic extensions. The particle production during this dynamical evolution is usually treated perturbatively and assumed to originate from the incoherent two-body collisions. We study particularly the sensitivity of the particle production to the underlying nuclear equation of state.
The Δ potential in nuclear matter from the Argonne v<inf>28</inf> interaction

The model potential Argonne v₂₈, which allows all possible transitions from NN states to NΔ and ΔΔ ones, is used to calculate the potential energy of the Δ isobar in nuclear matter. All diagrams with one nucleon hole line are summed up in the framework of a G-matrix approach. The Δ potential so obtained was found to be weakly attractive at low density, becoming repulsive at increasing density with a value of 50 MeV at saturation. The repulsion receives the main contribution from the isotropic spin T=2 channels and appears to be in contradiction with the phenomonology on Δ production in nuclei. The possible drawbacks of the interaction or the possible missing physical effects are briefly discussed.
