Abstract

Charged particles have been observed in collisions of Au on Au at incident energies from 150 AMeV to 800 AMeV using phase I of the FOPI detector system at GSI. The setup ensures detection of almost all charged particles in the forward hemisphere of the center-of-mass. Results are presented on the multiplicity of charged particles and on their momentum space distribution under various global cuts probing the fragmentation, stopping and flow pattern in the reaction. A midrapidity source of clusters is observed for the most stopped and azimuthally most symmetric collisions. The observations are confronted with dynamical model calculations.
