Abstract

Recent results are presented of proton spectra from 14.6 GeV/c/nucleon 28Si + Al(Pb) collisions. Data were obtained with the E814 experiment at the AGS accelerator. Proton pt and dN/dy spectra were measured for the Pb target within the rapidity range 1.0 < y < 3.8. For the symmetric system Si + Al, measurements cover the full rapidity range. From the observations and the comparison of our data with model calculations, we conclude that at the AGS energy: (1) a high degree of stopping has been reached; (2) even for collisions with full overlap, proton dN/dy and extracted 〈pt〉-values still depend on the charged particle multiplicity; (3) RQMD calculations, which predict an initial energy density as high as ≈ 1.8 GeV/fm3, reproduce well the measured proton dN/dy distributions.
