Coherent production in the nuclear Coulomb field

Abstract

We derive formulas for hadronic production in the Coulomb field of a nucleus. They are valid for realistic charge and matter distributions and account for absorption and elastic Coulomb scattering. Formulas of this kind have not been given before. We also discuss the corresponding strong production process where we obtain results differing from previous findings.

Precision tests of fundamental physics with η and η′ mesons
2022, Physics Reports
Decays of the neutral and long-lived $η$ and $η^{'}$ mesons provide a unique, flavor-conserving laboratory to test low-energy Quantum Chromodynamics and search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. They have drawn world-wide attention in recent years and have inspired broad experimental programs in different high-intensity-frontier centers. New experimental data will offer critical inputs to precisely determine the light quark mass ratios, $η$ – $η^{'}$ mixing parameters, and hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. At the same time, it will provide a sensitive probe to test potential new physics. This includes searches for hidden photons, light Higgs scalars, and axion-like particles that are complementary to worldwide efforts to detect new light particles below the GeV mass scale, as well as tests of discrete symmetry violation. In this review, we give an update on theoretical developments, discuss the experimental opportunities, and identify future research needed in this field.

Radiative decay width of the a<inf>2</inf>(1320)- meson

Coherent π⁺π⁻π⁻ production in the interactions of a beam of $600 GeV$ π⁻ mesons with C, Cu and Pb nuclei has been studied with the SELEX facility (Experiment E781 at Fermilab). The a₂(1320) meson signal has been detected in the Coulomb (low q²) region. The Primakoff formalism used to extract radiative decay width of this meson yields $Γ=284±25±25 keV$ , which is the most precise measurement to date.
The ϱ radiative decay width: A measurement at 200 GeV

The ϱ⁻ radiative decay width has been measured by studying the production of ϱ⁻ via the Primakoff effect by 200 GeV incident π⁻ on Cu and Pb targets. This width was obtained by fitting the measured dσ/dt for ϱ production with the theoretical coherent differential cross section including both the electromagnetic and strong contributions. The measured radiative width value is 81 ± 4 ± 4 keV: it is consistent with the ratio $Γ(ϱ → πγ)/Γ(ω → πγ) ∼ case:1 9$ as expected from the vector dominance and the quark model.
