Cross sections for (π−, π−n) reactions on 19F and 31P in the 3−3 resonance region

Abstract

Activation cross sections for the reactions $^{19} F (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{18} F and^{31} P (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{30} P$ were measured at pion energies from 140 to 240 MeV and found to reach maxima of 39 ± 5 mb and 60 ± 11 mb, respectively, near 180 MeV. The results are compared with calculated cross sections and with the results of other measurements.

A two-step model of pion induced nucleon knockout reactions

A two-step model is utilized to explain the puzzling isospin dependence of pion induced nucleon knockout reactions. The model treats the pions as strongly absorbed by nuclei. The pion is assumed to interact only once, even in the two-step mechanism. Energy transfer systematics suggest the pion interaction is with a four-nucleon cluster. If so, this helps to explain the surprisingly large pion induced α-knockout cross sections seen recently.
Excitation functions for nuclear reactions induced by high-energy pions

A theoretical expression for the total cross section of pion induced reactions of the form (π, π n) and (π, πp) has been deduced on the basis of the impulse approximation and one-step knock-out mechanism. In the derivation, both the elastic and inelastic interactions have been taken into account. The expression has been applied to the reactions $^{12} C (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{11} C,^{12} C (π^{+}, π^{+} n)^{11} C,^{19} F (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{18} F,^{40} Ar (π^{−}, π^{−}^{39} Cl,^{65} Cu (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{64} Cu and^{181} Ta (π^{−}, π^{−} n)^{180} Ta$ for energies 0.08 – 2.0 GeV. The agreement of the calculated values with the experimental data is found to be good. The first resonance peak in all the cases appears to be shifted towards the lower energy side of the free particle pion-nucleon resonance peak.
