Abstract

Recently the pion-deuteron cross section was measured for momentum transfers up to Δ2 ≈ 2(GeV/c)2 and compared with Glauber's multiple scattering theory. We show that for such large momentum transfers there will be a correction to Glauber's formula which decreases the theoretical cross section by about 15%. It is due to the internal deuteron motion which coupled to the momentum transfer Δ will cause large fluctuations in the nucleon recoil energy.
