Inclusive two negative-pion production at 90° in the proton-nucleon C.M. system for nuclear targets and 28.5 GeV/c

Abstract

The relative yields on three different targets for the inclusive production of two π are fitted to σAα for proton-nucleus interaction at plab = 28.5 GeV/c at different transverse pion momenta. The exponent α increases with pT and becomes greater than 1 at pT > 1.1 GeV/c. The data are compared with fireball models to determine the lifetime τ and dimension R of the fireball. For beryllium, we found τ = (1.4−0.6+0.5) × 10−24 sec and R = 0.8 ± 0.4 fm.
