Experimental results on the ωπ and ππ systems as observed in the pp annihilations at rest: pp→ω0π+π−

Abstract

2400 events of the type $p p → ω^{0} π^{+} π^{−}$ are extracted from more than 10 000 five-body annihilations at rest: $p p → 2π^{+} 2π^{−} π^{0}$ . The B meson is observed in the system (ωπ): its mass, width, and spin-parity are analyzed. Limits are given for the branching ratios $B → φπ/ B → ωπ and B → K K / B → ωπ$ . It is necessary to introduce a structure in the (ππ) S-wave, I=0 amplitude to obtain a good interpretation of the data.

The antinucleon-nucleon interaction at low energy: Annihilation dynamics

The general properties of antiproton–proton annihilation at rest are presented, with special focus on the two-meson final states. The data exhibit remarkable dynamical selection rules: some allowed annihilation modes are suppressed by one order of magnitude with respect to modes of comparable phase-space. Various phenomenological analyses are reviewed, based on microscopic quark dynamics or symmetry considerations. The role of initial- and final-state interaction is also examined.
Study of antiproton annihilation on neutrons into ωπ-π0

Data are presented on antiproton neutron annihilation at rest into ωπ⁻π⁰ taken with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR (CERN) using a liquid deuterium target. The partial wave analysis shows evidence for at least two ωπ vector resonances above the ρ(770) ground-state. Possible evidence for a third ρ′ state with a mass around 1180 MeV is discussed. The results are compared to model dependent predictions concerning the nature of the ρ′ states.
Antineutron physics

Antineutrons (n̄'s) have been used only in the last few years as projectiles for nuclear and particle physics experiments, mainly in the low momentum region. The reason is that, in spite of some undoubted advantages (absence of Coulomb corrections, pure I=1 state for the ( $n ̄ p$ ) system), the difficulties in obtaining beams of n̄'s of suitable intensity and energy definition were overwhelming. The setting-up of suitable beams at BNL and mainly at CERN LEAR (with momentum lower than $400 MeV /c$ ) allowed a first round of interesting experiments.
In this review a summary of the most important experimental issues obtained in this field will be presented. They range from studies on the antineutron annihilation dynamics, intended to shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the particles production as well as for the possible formation of quasi-nuclear nucleon-antinucleon bound states, to meson spectroscopy researches, aiming to identify the existence of new, possibly exotic, resonant structures. Studies on the interactions of antineutrons on nuclei were performed as well, to investigate the nature of the annihilation process (free from Coulomb interactions) inside matter.
Finally, some hints about a possible future development of this research subject will be discussed.
Annihilation at rest of antiprotons and protons into neutral particles

Annihilation of antiprotons and protons at rest into neutral particles has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. Annihilation frequencies are determined for final states containing π⁰, η, η′ and ω mesons using a liquid and a room temperature, 12 bar, gaseous hydrogen target. Including annihilation frequencies for production of neutral kaons from other experiments, the identified reactions for annihilation in liquid hydrogen add up to a branching fraction of (3.56±0.28)% per annihilation compared to the frequency of (3.50±0.30)% with which we observe the all-neutral decay modes inclusively. Since the exclusive final states are normalized to the Crystal Barrel measurement of the π⁰π⁰ branching ratio, the latter result is strongly supported by this present study.
Resonances in p̄p→ηπ+π-π+π - at rest

Data on $p ̄ p→ηπ^{+} π^{−} π^{+} π^{−}$ at rest show two resonant processes: (a) $f_{0} (1370)η,f_{0} (1370)→σσ$ and $ρρ$ , (b) $η(1440)σ$ , $η(1440)→ηπ^{+} π^{−}$ . The branching ratio $BR[f_{0} (1370)→ρρ]/BR[f_{0} (1370)→σσ]=0.98±0.25$ in the mass range available here. Using data on $p ̄ p→ηπ^{0} π^{0}$ , the ratio $Γ_{4π} /Γ_{2π} ⩾5$ for $f_{0} (1370)$ . The effects of the strongly $s$ -dependent width of $f_{0} (1370)$ are discussed in some detail.
The $η(1440)$ is observed decaying to $ησ$ and $a_{0} (980)π$ , with strong destructive interference between them. In its decay to $a_{0} (980)π$ , a narrow peak appears in the $ηπ$ mass spectrum, but 30–50 MeV above that usually attributed to $a_{0} (980)$ and significantly above the $KK$ threshold. This effect is explained naturally by a two-step process: $η(1440)→K^{∗} (890)K$ followed by rescattering of the two kaons through $a_{0} (980)$ to $ηπ$ above the $KK$ threshold.
Contribution from S and P waves in pp̄ annihilation at rest

The annihilation frequencies of 19 $p ̄ p$ annihilation reactions at rest obtained in different target densities are analysed in order to determine the values of the $P$ -wave annihilation percentage at each target density and the average hadronic branching ratios from $P$ - and $S$ -states. Both the assumptions of linear dependence of the annihilation frequencies on the $P$ -wave annihilation percentage of the protonium state and the approach with the enhancement factors of Batty are considered. Furthermore the cases of incompatible measurements are discussed.
