Abstract

Results are described of an investigation of the radium gamma-spectrum in equilibrium with its decay products, based on recoil electron measurements in the energy range 150–2530 keV. Forty-four gamma-lines have been observed, and their relative intensities and the number of quanta per disintegration determined.

Experimental nuclear structure and decay data are evaluated for all of 12 known nuclides of mass 214 (Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, Po, At, Rn, Fr, Ra, Ac, Th, Pa). For each nuclide, detailed evaluated spectroscopic information is presented in each reaction and decay, and the best values combining all available data are recommended for level properties, γ and β radiations, and other spectroscopic properties in the Adopted Levels and Gammas. The present evaluation supersedes the earlier one on A=214 by S.-C. Wu (2009Wu02), published in Nuclear Data Sheets 110, 681 (2009).

Calibration of γ-spectrometers

The various aspects of γ-spectrometer calibration are examined. Two methods are described, one using the whole γ-spectrum and the other suitably chosen peaks. The problem of the choice of references is broached: multiple or single? Instrumental errors are studied, together with various corrections related to disintegration schemes. Finally the accuracy obtainable is discussed and it is shown that, for many radionuclides, γ-spectrometry is a precise and often the only possible method of measurement.
Monte Carlo calculations of relative efficiencies of Ge(Li) detectors

By means of a Monte Carlo computer program the relative full energy peak efficiency and relative double escape peak efficiency for gamma rays of a cylindrical Ge(Li) detector with volume of 50 m³, a rectangular Ge(Li) detector with volume of 30 cm³ and a trapezoidal Ge(Li) detector with volume of 50 cm³ has been calculated. The gamma source was assumed to be a point placed 10 cm from the detector. The calculated efficiency curves for the cylindrical detector were compared with the curves experimentally obtained by other authors. The agreement was found to be within quoted errors. The calculated efficiency curves of all three detectors have been used to determine the gamma ray relative intensities in the decays of ²²Na, ⁶⁰Co, ⁵⁶Co and ²²⁶Ra. It has been found that the relative intensity values of gamma rays for the above sources can be reproduced within 5%.
