Substratum influences uptake of radium-226 by plants
2021, Science of the Total EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :Ubiquitous in the environment, the alkaline earth element radium is present in all CZ compartments including water, rock, soil, and vegetation. The radium-226 isotope belongs to the uranium-238 decay chain and is an alpha emitter with a half-life of 1600 ± 7 years (Duchemin et al., 1994). Several studies have focused on the uptake of 226Ra by plants, quantifying a transfer factor (or concentration ratio) of 226Ra from the soil to the plant tissues (Simon and Ibrahim, 1990; Sheppard et al., 2006; Vandenhove et al., 2009; Uchida et al., 2009).
The evaluation of the 1001.03 keV gamma emission absolute intensity using fundamental parameter method
2017, Journal of Environmental RadioactivityCitation Excerpt :Nowadays, the absolute intensity of 1001.03 keV is optimized around 0.847% (http://www.nucleide.org/DDEP_WG/Nuclides/Pa-234m_tables.pdf). Uyttenhove 2005, has mentioned that one should be careful about the different reported values for the 1001.03 keV gamma-ray transmission absolute intensity (Uyttenhove, 2005) that varies widely from 0.59% up to 1.12% (Bjornholm and Nielsen, 1963; Gunnink and Tinney, 1971; Momeni, 1982; Moss, 1986; Browne and Firestone, 1986; Coursol et al., 1990; Scott and Marlow, 1990; Jagam and Simpson, 1992; Lin and Harbottle, 1992; Siemon et al., 1992; Sutton et al., 1993; Duchemin et al., 1994; Firestone and Shirley, 1996; Adsley et al., 1998; Yücel et al., 1998; Nzuruba, 1999; Anilkumar et al., 1999; Ushakov, 2002; Yücel et al., 2003; Korob and Nuno, 2006; Al-Saleh et al., 2006; Browne and Tuli, 2007; Begy et al., 2009). Usually, the secular equilibrium of 238U series radionuclides is achieved in U ore and some geological rocks where radon gas (222Rn) does not escape and the activity ratios between different series member radionuclides become unity.
The re-evaluation of the 234mPa's 1001.03 keV gamma emission absolute intensity for the precise assessment of 238U
2017, Journal of Environmental RadioactivityCitation Excerpt :Further publications have reported other values that were optimized around 0.835% (Duchemin et al., 1994; Firestone and Shirley, 1996; Adsley et al., 1998; Yücel et al., 1998; Anilkumar et al., 1999; Nzuruba, 1999; Yücel et al., 2003; Al-Saleh et al., 2006; Korob and Nuno, 2006; Browne and Tuli, 2007; Begy et al., 2009; Ushakov, 2002). Uyttenhove 2005, has mentioned that one should be careful about the different reported values for the f-value of 1001.03 keV gamma-ray transmission (Uyttenhove, 2005) that varies widely from 0.59% up to 1.12% (Bjornholm and Nielsen, 1963; Gunnink and Tinney, 1971; Momeni, 1982; Moss, 1986; Browne and Firestone, 1986; Coursol et al., 1990; Scott and Marlow, 1990; Jagam and Simpson, 1992; Lin and Harbottle, 1992; Siemon et al., 1992; Sutton et al., 1993; Duchemin et al., 1994; Firestone and Shirley, 1996; Adsley et al., 1998; Nzuruba, 1999; Anilkumar et al., 1999; Ushakov, 2002; Yücel et al., 2003; Korob and Nuno, 2006; Al-Saleh et al., 2006; Browne and Tuli, 2007; Begy et al., 2009). During the course of a longtime time experience of proficiency exercises with the international atomic energy agency (IAEA) and other international organizations, upward curvature was often clearly noticed in the photopeak efficiency curve of the value associated with the 1001.03 keV gamma-ray energy transition indicating strong possibility of deviation (undervalued) of the f-value from the currently used one.
