Abstract

A novel heavy ion detector system enabling two-dimensional position determination has been developed. Spacial resolution is achieved by a large area resistive cathode. The detector system has been successfully used in an in-beam experiment in connection with the 4π γ-spectrometer GASP, revealing a mean position resolution of about 2 mm throughout the active area of 78 cm2. The position calibration of the trapezoidal detectors is performed by employing a simple neural network algorithm. The remaining image distortions cause a mean position deviation of less than 2 mm.
