Abstract

The expansion of the off-shell s-wave isospin-symmetriic πN amplitude suggests that the s-wave interaction of pions with the nuclear medium has complex behaviour. It is appreciably repulsive for photon-like or space-like pions but it becomes small for on-shell pions. This has consequences for a number of physical quantities such as the quark condensate in nuclei and the effective pion mass. It may also offer an explanation for the (p,n) puzzle, where the attraction from the pion exchange force has failed to appear.
