Abstract

The formalism required to describe the T(d, n)⁴He or ³He(d, p)⁴He reaction when all particles may be polarized is discussed. The relation among the various sets of spin-1 tensors is stated explicitly, so that the formulas applying to a particular experiment may be written easily in terms of any desired system.

A study of the 2H(3He, 4He)1H reaction with a polarised 3He beam at 27 and 33 MeV

Angular distributions of the ³He analysing power and differential cross section were measured for the ²H(³He, ⁴He)¹H reaction at incident ³He lab energies of 27 and 33 MeV. Analysis of this and other data suggest the presence of a broad resonance, or resonances, around 28 MeV excitation in ⁵Li. The evidence for the dominant M-matrix elements involving a change in channel spin (i.e. the ΔS = −1 rule) is examined and also the question is investigated as to whether the data can be consistently explained without requiring tensor forces in the interaction.

The purpose of this investigation is to find regions of energy and angle for πp elastic scattering in which the proton polarization P reaches its maximum value of unity. For incident pion beam energies below 900 MeV, five such regions exist in π⁺p and six such regions exist in π⁻p, as shown by simple graphical techniques. This suggests that crude polarized target experiments measuring the Wolfenstein parameters R and A will precisely determine the proton polarization because of the quadratic relation P²+R²+A² = 1.
