Abstract

The spectra of 17O and 41Ca are described by a weak coupling model for the low lying multiparticle, multihole states (up to five-particle, four-hole states are required). The energies of these states are obtained from the mass tables and the schematic particlehole interaction of Bansal and French (configuration mixing is neglected). Overall approximate agreement is obtained with the number and energies of states for each jΠ and for the number and positions of the strong transitions observed in one and two-nucleon transfer reaction experiments. The results of shell model calculations can be qualitatively understood on the basis of this model. The limitations of the model and the need for more data to make detailed comparisons with theoretical models is discussed.
