Abstract

Nuclear structure data available through December 1975 are compiled, and adopted level properties are given. The bulk of the data is presented pictorially for easy comparison. Experimental details, references, and additional comments, where required, are given in the text. All drawings, tables, and comments are reproduced from the computerized Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF). Any additions or corrections desired by the users should be addressed to the compilers for maintenance and updating of the computer file.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for known nuclides of mass number 131 (Cd,In,Sn,Sb,Te,I,Xe,Cs,Ba,La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Pm,Sm,Eu) with Z = 49 to 63 and N = 82 to 68 have been evaluated and presented together with adopted energies and Jπ of levels in these nuclei. No excited-state data are yet available for ¹³¹Cd, ¹³¹Sm and ¹³¹Eu. Fairly rich structures are known in all other A = 131 nuclides. Superdeformed and highly-deformed structures are known in ¹³¹Ce (two SD bands) and in ¹³¹Pr (two HD bands). This evaluation represents a complete update of previous evaluations of A = 131 by Yu.V. Sergeenkov, Yu.L. Khazov, T.W. Burrows, M.R. Bhat (1994Se10).
The decay of 133Pm and the structure of 133Nd

The decay of ¹³³Pm to ¹³³Nd has been studied with mass-separated sources from the UNISOR facility. Multiscaled spectra of γ-rays, X-rays, and conversion electrons, as well as γγt-, Xγt-, eγt-, and eXt-coincidences were obtained. The half life of ¹³³Pm was measured to be 15±3 s. A decay scheme has been constructed consisting of 51 excited states and 106 transitions in ¹³³Nd. Isomers decaying by M3 and E1 transitions are established in ¹³³Nd. The low-lying levels are discussed in terms of the particle-plus-triaxial-rotor model and the onset of deformation in the region bounded by Z ⩾ 58, N ⩽ 76.

Coexistence in odd-mass nuclei

Shape coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near closed shells (±1 and ±3 nucleons) is reviewed. Two main approaches are presented. The more historical one starts from the explicit introduction of a deformation degree of freedom and allows particular Nilsson orbitals to occur very low in excitation energy. A second approach starts from spherical particle-hole (p-h) excitations across a closed shell and allows interactions with quadrupole vibrations of the underlying core nucleus. The equivalence between the two approaches is discussed in some detail. Attention is given also to other approaches to the description of coexistence. A detailed review of the experimental evidence for coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near the Z = 28, 50, 82 and N = 28, 50, 82 closed shells is made. In addition, the fingerprints of coexisting states, i.e. the most pronounced nuclear structure properties characterizing such states, are presented. These fingerprints provide a necessary (though not sufficient) set of conditions for identifying coexistence throughout the nuclear mass table. At the end, we briefly describe the connection of the present study to other areas of nuclear structure such as related configurations in doubly-even nuclei, many-particle many-hole excitations, deep-lying hole states, and the possibility of incorporating these degrees of freedom into an Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) framework. A major conclusion of this review is that there is a clear connection between shape coexistence and shell-model intruder states. A variety of topics is suggested for future experimental and theoretical investigation.
Phase effects on chemical behaviors of tin, antimony and tellurium fission products in aqueous solutions

The oxidation states of tin, antimony and tellurium isotopes formed predominently (>91%) by fission were investigated in aqueous solutions of ²³³U irradiated in a reactor. Results were corrected for the thermal reactions with the bulk radiolysis products using tracers for each element. In 0.4 M H₂SO₄ solutions containing 4.3 mM ²³³UO₂²⁺, 1.5 mM Te(IV) and 1.5 mM Te(VI), the fraction of Te(IV) is 98 ± 2% in the absence of oxygen and 92 ± 3% in the presence of oxygen. In frozen solutions of the same composition, the fraction of Te(IV) is 83 ± 2% in the absence of oxygen and 81 ± 3% in the presence of oxygen. Similar differences are also found in the case of the antimony isotopes in 0.4 M H₂SO₄ solutions and the tin isotopes in 1 M HCl solutions. For the interpretation of the differences, the reducing action of the species diffusing from the track of the fission fragments are considered.
