Study of 113Cd by the 110Pd(α,nγ) reaction

The nuclear structure of ¹¹³Cd was studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy. A level scheme, consisting of 65 levels and more than 100 transitions, was constructed on the basis of γγ coincidences using five compton-suppressed Ge detectors. Spins were assigned by means of excitation function slopes and angular distribution analysis. The resulting level scheme was interpreted in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model.

The giant dipole resonance built on excited states in 113,114Sn and level densities in the vicinity of the neutron separation energy

The statistical decay of the excited state giant dipole resonance induced by capture of 24 and 26 MeV α-particles on ¹¹⁰Cd has been investigated exclusively for events feeding isomeric levels in the final nuclei ¹¹³Sn and ¹¹⁴Sn. This was done by measuring coincidences between high-energy γ-rays and delayed γ-rays depopulating the $J^{π} = 11− 2$ and J^π = 7⁻ isomers in ¹¹³Sn and ¹¹⁴Sn, respectively. GDR and level-density parameters were deduced from fits of spectra obtained from statistical-model calculations to the data. The GDR energy (E = 15.2±0.5 MeV) and strength (S = 0.9±0.1) are close to the values of the ground state GDR. The increase of the width of the GDR (Γ = 7±1 MeV) is in agreement with previous measurements at higher excitation energies. The level-density parameters obtained from the fits can be well reconciled with the interpolated Dilg parameters.
Half-lives of 111mCd, 113mIn and 115mIn

Bremsstrahlung from 4.5 MeV electrons on a platinum target was used to produce nuclear isomers in three nuclides through (γ,γ′) excitation of higher lying states and their half-lives were measured. The obtained values are 48.54±0.05 min for ^111mCd, 1.660±0.005 h for ^113mIn and 4.485±0.004 h for ^115mIn. The intensity ratio of 497 keV/336 keV gamma transitions in the decay of ^115mIn was determined as 1.04±0.05 × 10⁻³. The methods of analysis and the results are discussed.
Coexistence in odd-mass nuclei

Shape coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near closed shells (±1 and ±3 nucleons) is reviewed. Two main approaches are presented. The more historical one starts from the explicit introduction of a deformation degree of freedom and allows particular Nilsson orbitals to occur very low in excitation energy. A second approach starts from spherical particle-hole (p-h) excitations across a closed shell and allows interactions with quadrupole vibrations of the underlying core nucleus. The equivalence between the two approaches is discussed in some detail. Attention is given also to other approaches to the description of coexistence. A detailed review of the experimental evidence for coexistence in odd-mass nuclei near the Z = 28, 50, 82 and N = 28, 50, 82 closed shells is made. In addition, the fingerprints of coexisting states, i.e. the most pronounced nuclear structure properties characterizing such states, are presented. These fingerprints provide a necessary (though not sufficient) set of conditions for identifying coexistence throughout the nuclear mass table. At the end, we briefly describe the connection of the present study to other areas of nuclear structure such as related configurations in doubly-even nuclei, many-particle many-hole excitations, deep-lying hole states, and the possibility of incorporating these degrees of freedom into an Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) framework. A major conclusion of this review is that there is a clear connection between shape coexistence and shell-model intruder states. A variety of topics is suggested for future experimental and theoretical investigation.
