Abstract

The exchange of the different molecular species of phosphatidylcholines and phosphatidylethanolamines between rat liver mitochondria and microsomes has been studied.

Experiments with isolated particles showed that all species of lecithins and phosphatidylethanolamines were transported to almost the same extent from microsomes to mitochondria, with a slight tendency towards a greater extent of exchange with more unsaturated species.

In rat liver slices incubated with [32P]phosphate the specific activities of individual lecithins and phosphatidylethanolamines in microsomes were higher than in mitochondria. The distributions of radioactivity between the different molecular species was very similar in microsomes and mitochondria. The specific activities of the various lecithins at 1- and 3-h incubations were in the following order: dienoic > monoenoic > hexaenoic > tetraenoic > trienoic and of the various phosphatidylethanolamines, hexaenoic > trienoic > dienoic > monoenoic > tetraenoic.

It is concluded that there is no selectivity in the exchange of lecithin and phosphatidylethanolamine subspecies between microsomes and mitochondria in the intact cell.
